Need help in Normandy

We will be in Normandy for 4 days in late April. We will be coming from Provence on the train. Thought we would stay in Bayeux, use the sight seeing buses for our transportation in Bayeux (2 days)then take the train to Caen. Rent a car, stay in Honfleur and drive to sights in that area. Now for the problem, finding a hotel in Bayeux (no rooms). I have checked on Hotel d'Argouges and Lion d'Or hotel. Refuse to stay in a large hotel but want access to the town since we will not have a car. Any suggestion on small hotels in the local area or perhaps I am not approching this correctly. Thanks one and all,

My Best Western hotel guide to Europe shows a 3* called Grand Hotel du Luxembourg in Bayeux. I use this guide extensively when driving in Europe--the BW hotels in Europe are nicer than the BW's in the US and the guide shows their exact location. Their web site is www.bestwestern.com.<BR>

If you don't mind a 7-minute walk into town, try the Ch&acirc;teau de la Bellefontaine. We loved our stay there two years ago.

Why don't you just rent a car in Bayeux? Caen and Bayeux are not that far apart, then you would have a car the whole time.

The Hotel de Reine Mathilde is very comfortable and is centrally-located (Just one block from the Tapestry). Tel. 02 31 92 08 13. Fax 02 31 92 09 93.<BR><BR>Regards,<BR><BR>Jinx Hoover

Lu,<BR><BR>I second St. Cirq's recommendation of the Hotel Bellefontaine. We stayed there in 2001 and found it perfect. It is a short walk in to town.<BR><BR>Incidentally, one of Alec Guinness's last films, &quot;A Foreign Field&quot;, made for public television, with Jeanne Moreau and a great cast, used the Bellefontaine as a hotel site in the movie. If your video store has a print of this film it would give you a good idea; also, the hotel has a website. <BR><BR>I highly recommend this hotel.

Some great advice! I will check out these hotels. And on the renting a car in Bayeux, I don't think you can. Please correct me if I am wrong. Because that is what I wanted to in the beginning. Thanks again all--

Lu, wouldn't it be possible to take the train from Provence into Caen and rent your car. I agree with the other posters, it's a good idea to have a car when you are sight-seeing in the area. You could use Bayeux as your base. We stayed at the following B&amp;B, but plan to check out the Bellefontaine next time.<BR><BR>Le Manor des Doyens<BR>St Loup Hors<BR>Bayeux <BR>14400 France<BR>From US: 011 33 2 31 22 39 09 <BR>[email protected]<BR>www.vrbo.com/vrbo/352.htm<BR><BR>It's a huge rambling house. Friendly proprietor. Would stay there again.<BR>

There are car rentals in Bayeux.<BR><BR>Since most companies want a minimum of 3 days, it may not cost much more for 4 days, than 2.<BR><BR> Keith

I will be in Bayeux in June without a car (will come down from Paris for 1 night). The Bellefontaine sounds like a good hotel choice. If we don't want to carry our luggage that far are there taxis available?

My wife and I got train from Paris to Bayeux and found cab at station to take us to hotel. Nice town for walking around. Tapestry is interenting-a must.<BR>Took bus trip to beaches. Stayed overnite and train back to Paris next day.
