need Germany itinerary suggestions for Romantic Road
We will be renting a car for 2 weeks in mid September. We are flying into Munich and leaving for Paris from Cologne by train 2 weeks later. Our plans so far are:
1. spend 2 days in Munich(Octoberfest will have not yet started)
2. spend 2 nights in Fussen. We will spend one day at the castles and 1 day around Mittenwald.
3. From Fussen we are planning to drive the Romantic Road, staying at Rothenburg der Tauber for 2 nights.
Question 1: We would like to make sightseeing stops between Fussen and Rothenburg. We plan to stop at Augsburg. What else should we not miss?
Question 2: Since we will be stopping to sightsee, should we plan on staying overnight somewhere between Fussen and Rothenburg? If so, what would be a good place?
Question 3. After Rothenburg, we are considering driving to Nuremburg and/or Bamburg and then to Wurzburg. Can we do this in a day? Someone has told us there is a very pretty road in this area, but I am not sure what or where it is. We would then spend one night somewhere along this route - maybe Wurzburg.
The next six days or so we will spend sightseeing in the Rhine/Neckar/Mosel area but we haven't started to map that out yet.
I would really appreciate feedback.

Hi; I think based on your flight/train plans, you could consider this route. From Fussen, think about a night in Regensburg. On the way to Regensburg you could visit Landshut. Then go on to the Nurnberg/Bamberg area. Leaving this area you could visit Wurzburg on the way to Rothenburg. While staying in Rothenburg you could visit Bad Wimplen and Schwabisch Hall. This route you will then be closer to the Mosel. You could then consider starting from Trier and on to Cochem. On the way to Trier you could visit Heidelberg. From Cochem you would be then approaching Koln while driving the Rhine. Dick

We enjoyed Landsberg (on the River Lech) on the way from Fussen to Rothenburg. We had lunch and enjoyed the beautiful little village. We drove on to Rothenburg for the night. We didn't stop in Augsburg as it is more of a city. We also spent a night in Wurzburg (also a city) and a night in Bamberg - very pretty town.

Both of the responses you've received so far are good.
Bad Wimpfen is on the Neckar River. We did both Dinkelsbuehl and Schwaebisch Hall in one day trip from Bad Wimpfen.
I would allow 4 days for the Rhine/Mosel area and spend the rest of your time visiting some of the places already mentioned like Regensburg, Bamberg and Wurzburg as well as Bad Wimpfen and Schwaebisch Hall.
This is a beautiful area of Germany and you will wish you had more time to explore it.
