Need carryon recommendation for Europe low-cost carrier

Part of our travel plans involve a quick hop from Paris to Belfast on Easy Jet or BA Connect. Both carriers limit carryon size of bag to approx. 22x18x8".

Unfortunately, the 22" wheeled carryons we use in the US are too wide and deep by an inch or two. Have you used a particular carryon bag on one of these discount carriers that you would recommend?

I see from surfing the Web that Patagonia has a piece that converts to a backpack and they call it the "maximum legal carryon" Has anyone used this?

Thanks

Caution: The Patagonia information may now be out of date. You may be able to alter the dimensions of some fabric bags with strapping.

Just carry on your pocket book and check the 22" suitcases?

I wouldn't necessarily trust the supposed sizes anyway. I've had to check things that easily fit the sizer (I think this was with EasyJet). I've also read of this happening with other airlines.

Willtravel, Did you have to pay for the extra checked bag? At 7.50 euros per kg, it gets pricey fast!!!

No, luckily I did not have to pay. This was during the August liquids kerfuffle, and perhaps they were just being obliging and/or acting out of general confusion.

This is only from reading, but I THINK there is also a VERY stringent weight limit on some of these also. In the low pounds.
