Need advice re driving tour of Germany

Have read numerous threads. Information obtained from this forum forms the basis of our 3-week driving tours of Germany in May. Many thanks to all Fodorites out there. Have done the mappy and viamichelin map thing. Our intineary is 90% set, but have few questions re driving from one base city to the next.
(1) From Frankfurt to Regensberg - start at 1100 and plan arrival at 1900. Plan to stop at Wurzburg for some sight-seeing (2 to 3 hours), then move on to Regensburg. Question, do we have time to stop (briefly) at Nurnberg?
(2) Regensburg to Koln - Yes, we are going backward intentionally to accommodate a "Rhine on Flames" event. Also know this is a LONG trip. Any recommendation which route to take (more direct and less traffic congestion on a Friday afternoon etc.)?. Thought might head direct back toward Frankfurt on the autobahn, but concern Friday traffic around Frankfurt. Any comment or suggestion?
(3) From Colmar (France) to Munich - we plan to stop by Freisberg, Meersberg, Lindau. Perhaps lunch at Meersberg. Is this a good route sight-see wise? How is Munich traffic in early evening? (week-day). Any area to avoid?
(4) From Munich to Frankfurt - Have to return car at Hertz located at Camberger Strasse (cross Mainzer Landstrasse) in Frankfurt before 1100. Questions: Which route should we take to make the deadline. This is on week-day too.
Thank you in advance for all your assistance.

Quick question....are you flying out of Frankfurt? If so, why don't you return your car at the airport? Tho you do pay more to pick up your auto at the airport, you can return it to the airport with no additional charge.

suspaul,
yes, we are flying out of Frankfurt the day after we return the car. We could return car at FRA, however, we are staying 1 night in city center. Hotel not far from Hertz location. Thanks for the heads-up re no extra cost for dropping car off at airport.

I don't know if your time permits but at Meersburg you could consider taking a boat to Mainau Insel (the flower island in the middle of the Bodensee. It is worth a stop. From Lindau you could drive across to Fussen to see Neuschwanstein. From there to Wieskirche, Oberammergau, Linderhoff, Ettal Monastary then toward Garmish to pick up the autobahn into Munich.

Hi sf,

If you don't have your tickets yet, why not fly home from Munich?
