I have the privilege to live on Lake Como. My site contains a few pages, starting at http://www.straughan.com/italy/travel/lake_como.htm , with some links and tips about where to eat and what to see in the area, mostly places off the beaten path of Varenna-Bellagio-Menaggio.

We loved Varenna. If what you want are views, there is no way you would ever beat the hotel Ermo Gaudio. It's slightly outside the town, up a hill. You take two elevators to get to the lobby and then they put us on the top (6th) floor--with a balcony. There's a terrace restaurant (limited menu, but fabulous food). All incredibly awesome. Loved walking around Varenna and had some good hikes. No trouble getting ferries anywhere. Can't wait to get back.
