Need a Palermo Hotel

After searching the posts, we are having difficulty identifying a nice hotel in Palermo. Any recommendations or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Actually, any advice for places to see and eat in Palermo would also be very helpful. Thanks.

Sorry to disagree with you Richard, but my family and I stayed at the Jolly in Palermo this past May and it had to be the worst hotel on our entire trip. To be fair, they were undergoing construction, but the hotel was very shabby, and the breakfast was sub-par compared to what we got elsewhere. My recommendation would be the Centrale Palace near Quatro Canti. The rooms were quite nice and the breakfast is served on the rooftop either inside or outdoors. It also is a 4* hotel.

In April 2000, I stayed 10 nights at the Hotel Massimo Plaza, across the street from Palermo's opera house, the Teatro Massimo, where final scenes from Godfather III were filmed. It is a superior three-star, boutique "hotel de charme", run British-style, with an excellent albeit smallish breakfast. Service is personal and cheerful. Rooms have been completely refurbished with modern bathrooms and individually-control air conditioning which really works well (it gets very hot in the summer!!!). Ask for a room facing the opera house (though be prepared for some road noise notwithstanding the double-pained windows). Reserve well in advance, as this hotel (with only 11 rooms) is well patronized by connoisseurs of travel in Sicily. The excellent Archeological Museum is down a back alley from the hotel, and there are a couple of good restaurants nearly. You can catch the airport bus in Piazza Castelnuovo, 600 yards north of the hotel. The "Quattro Canti" is 800 yards south on Via Maqueda. The Port is also about 800 yards away, and the central train station is about 1,500 yards to the south.
