An outline of Navigo and upcoming changes.

The reusable Cards:

Navigo – available free to anyone who registers online and resides in the Ile de France. User specific. If lost, card and remaining fare value replaced for 8€.

Navigo Découverte – available to anyone. Cost is 5€, user specific (name and photo required), registration not required. Not replaceable if lost.

Navigo Easy – transferable and available to anyone (sometime in April). Cost is 2€. May contain one of the following:

• Tickets T+ (up to 30)
• An airport ticket (either Orlybus or Roissybus)
• Navigo Jour pass
• Jeune week-end pass

Navigo Liberté – transferable and available to anyone with a French bank account (sometime fall 2019). Monthly card usage is totaled and automatically deducted from the associated bank account the following month. Includes these features:

• No additional charge for métro to bus/tramway connections.
• Accepted on airport buses, Orlybus et Roissybus.
• At issue, not available for billet Ile de France (RER or Transilien tickets).

The Fares:

Jour – daily pass, zone specific. Can include travel to airports. Current zone 1-2 fare: 7.50€

Semaine – weekly, Monday to Sunday pass, zone specific. May be purchased for current week through Thursday. Fares purchased on or after Friday become valid the following Monday. Current zone 1-5 fare: 22.80€

Mois – available for calendar month. Zone specific, may be purchased for current month through the 19th. Fares purchased on or after the 20th become valid the following month. Current zone 1-5 fare: 75.20€.

People will need to pay attention to this, since paper tickets will be disappearing before long.

They did away with paper tickets for the metro where I live a few years ago (Wash DC). That kind of bothers me as it seems a waste to generate so many plastic cards that are then just thrown away, by tourists. Similar to the Navigo Easy above, I guess, they don't have photos. I'm not sure why transportation systems are doing this as it seems plastic cards would cost more, but it does seem to be the wave of the future. So many pieces of plastic out there...

I don't think they worry about the paper so much as all of the mechanisms of reading a paper ticket and spitting it out again. An electronic ticket does not require any moving parts.
