Naples - Where to avoid?

We were just in Naples for 5 days and walked around a lot at night and did not feel unsafe. Anyplace that tourists are likely to be at night is probably OK, except obviously use common sense and stay out of parks and other lonely places. You will probably be staying in the Santa Lucia area, where most of the good hotels are, and there are always lots of people around.

I second Tony's advice. As long as you're not carrying lots of money and wearing expensive jewellery what can anybody steal? Italy is not known for serious crime, petty theft being the more common crime. Keep your valuables in the hotel's safe and credit cards and cash sensibly stashed in a money belt or inside buttoned pocket.

Several people tried to scare me out of going to Naples and I couldn't sleep the last night in Capri worrying, but it was so much better than I had imagined. We exchanged money in a stall near the Castel Nuovo, lunched in a tiny trattoria just off Via Toledo. I can't comment on the area by the main train station, as we only walked past this on our way to and from somewhere, but I can't recall feeling intimidated anywhere in Naples, except in some clothes shops!

An easy target for crime is an easy target no matter where you live. Pay attention and you'll be fine.

One suggestion, pay the extra money for a cab to get around town especially at night, especially in a strange city, especially if you might have to walk through an "iffy" neighborhood to get to your destination.
