naples & pickpockets
#41
I was in the terminal waiting to board a flight out of Naples and overheard a fellow telling another of his experience with thieves. It seems he was a a toll booth just outside of the city and as he reached to pay the toll a fellow came out of nowhere and tried to take the watch off of his wrist.
DD was with a tour group in Naples when someone rode up on a scooter and snatched the handbag from one of the group members on the go.
I have had my pocket picked twice. Once in Rome by a group of kids. All they got was a packet of AMEX travelers checks (that was a long time ago). The other was in Jerusalem last year.

I've never been pickpocketed, thankfully, been to France, Spain, Hungary, Turkey, Germany, England, Slovakia, Poland, Egypt, Guatemala....we were almost robbed by highway bandits in Guatemala, but that's another story. I'm heading to Italy this fall though and I absolutely appreciate the warning! I'm definitely not infallible, just lucky perhaps, and I tend to be rude to almost all strangers as you just never know. Always carry any money/credit cards, etc. in a money belt/purse inside my clothes, and try to always scan the surroundings. Now I know to watch out for geezers too
So sorry that happened to you!

dvbaresel - this thread is six years old and is full of people who (stupidly) have only themselves to blame for their losses.
One had a $2000 in a wallet in a shirt pocket. One had a wallet in another pocket - buttoned but since when is that secure.
The OP stereotyped pickpockets and was caught unawares. They come in all age groups - who would have thought?
The piazza outside Napoli Centrale is now a brand new metro station. I never take the bus - as the OP did - any more as metro line 1 takes you where you need to go in the historic centre. You need to be aware of you belongings on buses everywhere - it's not confined to Naples.
One other post above sat at a cafe for four hours and watched what he presumed was illegal activity going on and make some sweeping conclusions. I'm mystified why he sat there for four hours when there is a 2000 year old city at your feet but there is no accounting for the oddities of some people.
Finally you MUST carry your original identification document on you at all times - and for tourists that is their passport. Not a copy - the original. Some shouty people above say carry a copy but this is not permitted and never was. In these times of heightened security, you are best to be prepared and follow the law.
