Nafplion to Mistra as day trip ??

Have heard that Sparta, Greece (nearest town to Mistra ruins) is awful & to be avoided.

Since I'll be at Nafplion for a few nights next month, is it:

- feasible, or
- even a wise idea,

to visit Mistra as a day trip out of Nafplion.

The map shows Sparta as about 120km/ 75 miles from Nafplion.
Being accustomed to US style freeways, will I be in for a difficult drive? I especially don't want to be driving back to Nafplion in the dark, after a possibly long, tiring day at Mistra.

We did it on a day trip without any problems at all and we all were glad we did. The site is surely interesting.

We left the Amalia Nafplio at about 8:45am and got to the upper parking lot in Mistras around 10:30am (directly, nonstop). We visited Mistras for about 4 hours and then had lunch in Sparta (you're right about the city ... it's entirely forgettable; but having lunch in the shady garden of the Diethnes was very nice and the food was excellent). We were back at the hotel shortly after 5pm. The ladies decided to relax in the pool and we guys had plenty of time to vist Tyrins (accross the road from the hotel).

A couple of recommendations regarding Mistras:
a) there's almost no water on the site ... in the heat of summer a canteen of sorts is a must;
b) Mistras hill is very steep; there's a lower town, an upper town and the Kastro on the top of the hill; we drove directly to the upper parking lot, which is a the top of the upper town. From there it's a steep hike up to the Kastro. After having visited the Kastro we strolled down both towns, zig zagging to cover the whole site ... a piece of cake ... we thought! When we got all the way down, we didn't find a taxi or bus readily available to take us up the road to get our car. I got the honours ... no fun at all having to climb that steep hill when the sun was the hottest in the early afternoon. When you get to the site, before driving to the top look around if you can find a taxi or a bus instead. If you can find one, park your car at the bottom. If you can't find anything readily available, you may as well drive up and pray ... to find something when you're down.

c) the sooner one starts in Nafplio, the better; the Kastro should be visited first ... to hike up at 10am or so is much nicer than at 1pm !
