The ham you had for breakfast apparently was a Prosciutto Cotto; quite a common item in Italian homes. One of the best producers is Rovagnati, who uses only specially selected hams. Prosciutto can be crudo (raw cured) or cotto (cooked).

plafield,
Hope you get to see this question since this is an older thread - I just found your trip report, and I can already tell I'm going to enjoy it.
I did have a question about the hotel you stayed at in Rome, Arco del Lauro. I just checked out their website on romeby.com - do you know if they have a personal website? I know romeby.com tacks on additional charges.
The rooms at the Arco del Lauro seem really cute - was street noise ever a problem? So, does the B&B give you some sort of voucher to have breakfast at the cafe?
I'm sooo with you on the hard beds in Italy - I just thought I was being a sissy for making such a big deal about it since I hardly see anyone making a fuss about them here. Glad to know I'm not the only one who had a hard time dealing with the firm beds - was the beds at the Arco rock hard??
