My Draft Itinerary

It seems folks dont mind commenting on proposed itineraries so I would appreciate any thoughts suggestions or comments on mine. My wife and I will be renting a car and the trip is in early April. Our schedule is flexible.
Arrive Frankfurt Thursday a.m.
Drive to Manheim and stay with my brother who is in the USAF

Friday -- Day trip to Heidelberg. Stay in Mannheim Friday night.

Saturday -- Drive to Rothenberg, stay the night.

Sunday. Drive the Romantic Road, staying the night somewhere that catches our fancy.

Monday and Tuesday nights in Munich.

Wednesday -- visit Neuscwanstein. Stay in Salzburg.

Thursday explore Salzburg in the a.m. Begin drive thru Austria and Switzerlabd and again staying someweher that catches our fance.

Friday
Drive through Black Forest hope to arrive in Baden Baden.

SAtaurday lleave Baden Baden in the afternoon and head somewhere close to Frankfurt for our Sunday departure.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Pete; your itinerary looks very good.

My only suggestion is that the morning of Wednesday you leave early and try to visit Ettal (beautiful pewter souvenirs!) and Castle Linderhoff, in addition to Neuschwanstein(sp?). Another MUST in that area is Obberamergau (Christmas ornaments!), if anything just to look at the houses (fairy tale!). Then go on to Salzburg to tour the next day. If you have to forego one day in Munich, I'll say is a fair trade-off.

Pete, You have Salzburg in the wrong place. Go there from Munich and then to
the castle country---I would allow 2 days in each even if you have to cut
Munich short. I would stay in the cute
village of Oberammergau and see all of
the places mentioned above.

Bob's right about the direction.

I would stay an extra day in Rothenburg and/or Salzburg and skip the Black Forest and Baden-Baden. It's alot of extra driving with nothing really exciting compared to the Salzburg/Neuschwanstein route
