Must sees in Sicily

I am planning a honeymoon in Sicily and will have about 6-7 days. I want to start in Taormina go to Agrigento and then possibly Palermo. I would love some advice on "must-sees" along the way. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry I can't answer you based on personal experience - - I would love to visit Sicily someday soon.

But www.nytimes.com has a very enjoyable piece just today, on Sicilian agriturismo stays - -

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/07/15/travel/AGRI.html

you have to read it this week (to read it free) - - still have to register (but that costs nothing); after next Friday night, it costs to read it.

Best wishes,

Rex
Hi Brigitte, You definitely won't want to miss Siracusa with its rich history- greek temple, roman amphitheatre, archealogical park, not to mention the pleasure of walking through the part of town right on the water, through its narrow alleys and streets admiring all the old architecture.
Two other must sees I've been to is Taormina and Agrigento, which you have on your list already.
Two day trips I've taken which I really enjoyed were to Piazza Armerina and to Morgantina. If I had to pick one, Piazza Armerina is the better of the two. It's an old Roman villa that has parts still being uncovered today. The floors of the villa are made of little tile mosaics which depict pictures, and really paint history as it was. You've probably seen scenes from this on A&E or PBS at some point.
Palermo I've been to only once and I was not terribly impressed, with the exception of two things- the little bakery in the middle of one of the major parks downtown that had the best canoli I've ever had. And secondly, the catacombs. Some find it gruesome, I find it facsinating. Not for the faint of heart. Picture thousands of dead bodies hanging on the walls right before your eyes.
My boyfriend and his family are from a town in the middle the of isle called Caltanisetta. I enjoy it because its your typical smallish italian town where I can really dig into the culture.
Hope to do more daytrips this December when we go back. My boyfriend has mentioned possibly Messina, Enna, or Trapani.

Sicily is heaven on earth. Have a great time!

Susan

While you're in Taormina, take a walk inland to Castelmola, a tiny village on the hilltop you see across the valley behind Taormina. You will be invited in for a drink of the local almond wine, served in iced glasses. And then you can buy a bottle. There are coaches of tourists arriving from time to time, but if you walk you'll arrive first.
Here's one different. How about Corleone? It was the town that the "Godfather" was from. Many people visit that town now.

Good afternoo,, Brigitte Have only
gone around Sicily and probably the main
must sees are Palermo, Montreale, the
beaches at Mondello, Segusta, Selinunte,
Agrigento, Pza Armerina, Siracusa, Catania, Taormina and on the return to
Palermo the small town of Cefalu.
Have been into Palermo four or five times and been to Montreale and Mondello
from there. Food in Sicily is exceptional due to its various cultures
within its crusine along with its splendid fishes... From Taormina to
Palermo and to Agrigento would be in
the range of 3 hours, Its a small island
and stops can be arranged inbetween
sightseeing. Richard of LaGrange Park, IL. ..
I'll second what an earlier poster said- don't miss Montreale in Palermo. Forgot about that one! Beautiful Norman architecture, and a breath of fresh air away from downtown Palermo. It's a quick bus ride up.

Susan

Brigitte---

I have been to my Mother's homeland many times to spend time with cousins and conduct business. One place not many know about is the Parlemo Capuccini Priests. Under their monestary they discovered a mass grave. Each person is intact with clothes, eyes, hair and such. It was explained by one of the priests that it was a smoking process upon death that preserved these religious, higher ranking people. You see room such process was conducted in.

In another room your heart goes out to children. When I last visited here, about 10 years ago the priest told me (in Italian) that relatives from Rome still visited the small girl who has a creamy yellow bow on her head. Those folks are now in 80's. This girl was one of the last to be preserved in this very unusual manner. It is not for ones with a weaker tummy.
