I have been to Italy 3 times and used my ATM only. Took cash daily from dozens of different machines. No fees from the Italy banks and no fees from mine (I belong to a small credit union). No problems whatsoever with my card, at any ATM in Rome, Venice or Florence. Just sayin'...

I have never had my ATM card eaten at a European Bank in all my years of travelling.

If you are so worried about that why don't you
bring two cards with you?

Oh, my, Thin. I hope it's not your quote that there's a SMN in Venice. (There isn't one, and hasn't been for years)

No, my quote is for the shop in Firenze.

There is a SMN in Rome, not far from Piazza Navonna.
