Museums and Attractions closed in Rome during Holy Week and Easter?

Hi all,

Does anyone know what museums or attractions are closed (or open) in Rome during Holy week and Easter? We have heard that some museums may be FREE ADMISSION during this time? If some museums are closed, we will have to plan to visit those museums/attractions earlier.

Thanks everyone!

Not closed, but in use for religious ceremonies at various times: churches, the colosseum, Vatican facilities.

Look at the websites of those museums you are interested in. They will note holiday closings. This group appears to be closed only for Christmas and New Years (in addition to the regular Monday closing), for example http://www.galleriaborghese.it/info-en.htm

There is often a national Arts Week with free admission to museums and historic sites all over Italy, but that has usually been later in April, after Easter.

I would be surprised about free admission unless it coincides with European Heritage week (doesn't appear to as it's usually late April) when museums are free.

In the past, the Vatican Museums have closed early on Saturday (doesn't say this on their schedule) and are closed on Sunday and Easter Monday. Easter Monday is a major holiday and Italians will be off work.

I think you may find the Colosseum closed early on Good Friday as there is a procession with the Pope (Way of the Cross), but it's at night.

You can check hours for this year for most museums on this website. I'm sure next year won't be loaded for quite awhile, but you can see if the various museums were open at Easter this year.
