Museum pass in Paris

I have been reading that it is good to buy a museum pass in Paris. What is it called and where is the easiest place to buy it upon arrival in Paris? Approximately how many times would you have to use it to break even on the cost of not buying one and paying at each building or monument you want to visit?
I would appreciate any help in this matter.

3 day pass costs about $30US. 4-5 museums and you've covered your cost. In addition, consider the TIME it saves you waiting in line.
There are 5 day passes and one even longer (I only get the 3 day pass). It's also good at Versailles (talk about saving TIME).
It's called the Carte du Musee (or something like that) and can be bought at the big Metro stations, at the tourist offices, and at any of the sights that are covered. I found the best place to buy it is at the Musee d'Orsay gift shop...outside the museum, so you don't have to wait in line to get IN to the museum to buy it.
When I took my niece to Paris last year, we each got a three-day pass; we got to see more stuff because 1) i/o waiting in line for an hour, got in right away and 2) we went to museums that were closing in an hour (wouldn't pay $8 for 1 hour, but with the pass, it was "free"). I can't recommend it highly enough. Oh another spot to buy it: Balzac's house in the 16th. Not a lot of visitors, so no lines. You can buy it ahead of time through some sort of "French Accueil" company here in the U.S., but you pay a service fee, and the passes are so easy to find in Paris...

A hint that i saw on this forum last yr was purchase two three day passes with a day or two in between if you are staying that long. Less likely to get museum burnout that way.

Hi Bev -

Elvira covered pretty much what I'm going to say but I know that when I was going last year I liked to see as many people agreeing on a subject as possible. I figured, the more people agreeing, the better.

The pass is called a "Carte Musees et Monuments" (I only know because I'm looking at mine from Sept). I'm sure Elvira's right about the price of the
3-day, we bought the 5-day and I think it was about $40.

As stated above, you can buy them at major metro stops as well as any site/museum they are good at. (and other places I'm sure) We bought ours in the St. Michel metro station which was the closest one to our hotel.

Absolutely get it!! We saved 2+ hours in line (on an unusually warm Sept. day) at the Louvre. Just that was worth it to us. Also, as Elvria said, you will see more because you won't think twice about "bipping in" somewhere even if it's close to closing time or there is a big line. And then you have the museums you don't know if you would really find interesting. Normally, you may not risk $5-$8 a head but with the pass, you might as well check it out.

The Eiffel Tower (which is about $8) is not on the list but, most of the other major sites are:

Palace of Versailles, Louvre, Arc, Notre Dame, St. Chapelle, Musee d'Orsay, Musee Rodin, Musee Picasso, Musee de Cluny, etc. These are just a few, other odd ones include the Sewers, Catacombs, and Postal museum.

Have a Great Trip!

When do you leave...?

Bev:

After reading postings from several recent visitors to Paris, it seems that buying a museum pass is definitely a smart move. I was just looking at a website in which you can purchase the pass ahead of time (altho it's probably unnecessary to do so as they appear to be very easy to buy when you're there). Here's a list of where you'll have access to:

Got this info from following website “http://ticketavenue.com/info/museumlist.htm”
Info / Museum passes

List of Parisian monuments and Museums that accept the Museum passes :

Musee National d'Art Moderne - Centre Georges Pompidou - 4th arrondissement -
Conciergerie - 1st arrondissement -
Musee Cognacq-Jay - 3rd arrondissement -
Musee Eugene Delacroix - 6th arrondissement -
Musee des Egouts de Paris - 7th arrondissement -
Musee d'Ennery - 16th arrondissement -
Musee Hebert - 6th arrondissement -
Musee Jean Jacques Henner - 17th arrondissement -
Musee Gustave Moreau - 9th arrondissement -
Musee d'Orsay - 7th arrondissement -
Pantheon - 5th arrondissement -
Musee du Petit-Palais - 8th arrondissement -
Musee Picasso - 3rd arrondissement -
Musee des Plans-reliefs - 7th arrondissement -
Musee de la Poste - 15th arrondissement -
Musee Rodin - 7th arrondissement -
Sainte Chapelle - 1st arrondissement -
Musee de la Vie Romantique - 9th arrondissement -
Musee Zadkine - 6th arrondissement -
