The above statement is correct. Norally there are no cars driven by tourists in either village. Both are reached by train from Lauterbrunnen.
(Technically you can get to Wengen from Grindelwald, but it is a little of a round about route.)
Are the two villages worth it? Depends on how you define worth. In June many of the higher trails will be full of snow.
Good morning, Chris
Both Wengen and Murren are car free and
as previously stated both are reached
by rail from Lauterbrunnen. Wengen
can be reached from Grindelwald by
using the Wengeralpbahn to Kleine Scheidegg and then another train down
to Wengen. Also you can take the Mannlichen Bahn from Grindelwald up to
the Mannlichen and then by cable car
down to Wengen. Beleive you would have
a better view of the Alps being in
Murren, it is on the west side of the
Lauterbrunnen Valley and does have a
clear view of the Eigerwand and the Jungfraujoch. Part of the view would
be blocked by the Mannlichen if you
stay in Wengen. Also you can get a
very excellant view of the Alps from
the top of Piz Gloria, the Schlithorn.
Day trips are best accomplished by rail
out of either towns., Car would be
a liability for staying in the area..
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il...

Chris:
As others have noted, both Wengen and Murren are car-free, so if you have a car it most likely end up being parked in the Lauterbrunnen garage. That much said, Murren tends to be preferred by many for several reasons. First, its setting is extraordinary and one would be correct in saying that the view of the Jungfrau, Monch, and Eiger is "in your face". The view from Wengen isn't nearly as good. Second, the village is considerably more peaceful than Wengen, which has exponentially more commercial. Third, it has numerous walks nearby that require no more than heading in the right direction. There are plenty of walks from Wengen, too, but those from Murren start at a considerably higher altitude. You will be able to see lots of snow, though I doubt it will be a deterrent to the majority of the hiking areas that you may be considering.
