Munich Hbf is centrally located; you can walk down the main drag (I forget the name) to see churches, Marienplatz, etc., and convenient tram to art museums or subway to Deutsches Museum. You should be able to see a lot easily on a day trip from Salzburg.

Sinead,
It is walkable. You can also take the S-Bahn 1-stop to Karlplatz which is the beginning of the Old Town or 2-stops put you at Marienplatz which puts you in the heart of Old Town. The walk is an enjoyable one and if at the end of your days outing you can always take the S-Bahn or U-Bahn back to the train station. I would pick up a map of the transportation system at the train station so you will know where the various stops are located. The S-Bahn and U-Bahn are their rapid transit systems and are very good.

Nymphenburg and the Olympic Park are the only two major tourist attractions I can think of that are well removed from the main train station. Marienplatz, the point normally cited as the "center" of the downtown area is a short walk away. Nymphenburg, however, can be reached easily with tram line #17 which runs along Arnulfstrasse on the north side of the train station.
The Englischer Garten is a ways away from the train station, but can be reached easily with the U-bahn. The easies way is to take U6 or U3 to Geieselastrasse and head east a couple of blocks to any of several gates.

If you are there for only a day trip, you need to pick your objectives carefully. Any one of several places can consume 4 hours very quickly.
