Munich to Venice sleeper train on city night line. Advice needed!

I'm planning to take a sleeper train for the above mentioned trip. I'm trying to buy the tickets from the website but here's only an option of 'first class'. How do I differentiate between the first class economy and first class deluxe tickets then?

I'm also wondering if this journey is considered under the Eurail pass.

Thanks!

Which website? Deutsch Bahn?

On the City Nighliner, second class is normal seats.

DB's site gives you the first class options for these after you click on "check for availability":

Day couch (1 type)
Couchette (2 types)
Sleeper (4 types)

See the screenshot here (you didn't mention travel dates so I picked a random day in March): http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...b.png~original

I'm guessing you've been looking at raileurope.com or raileurope.com.au or raileurope-world.com?

They have built a whole booking engine on the flawed assumption that European trains only ever have 1st and 2nd class, then they find themselves having to pick two of the NINE possible accommodation types (seat, 6-berth couchette, 4-berth couchette, 1, 2 & 3 bed sleeper with washbasin, 1, 2 & 3 bed deluxe sleeper with toilet & shower) to 'call' 1st and 2nd class. Crazy!

You should always book a German train like this direct with German Railways at www.bahn.de/en.

Run a search, look for the direct CNL train with 0 changes in the search results, click for availability, and you'll see each type of accommodation listed clearly. You print your own ticket.

'Class' is actually irrelevant, technically the only accommodation classified as 1st class on CNL trains these days is a deluxe 1 or 2 bed sleeper, all other accommodations can be had with a 2nd class ticket or pass.

Thanks that was very helpful!

And do we get Eurail discounts for this leg? Think it's worth getting the rail pass? Actually my route is just Munich - Venice - Milan - Rome.

Thanks loads!

I highly doubt a pass will save you money. Italian trains can be really cheap if you book your tickets in advance

I took their train from Innsbruck to Milan, and went first class, private compartment. Private bath with a shower, and they bring you breakfast. It was 207 euros which I thought was quite reasonable, considering it included both the fare and the compartment. I imagine Munich to Venice would be comparable, or just a bit more. I recommend doing that if it fits in your budget.
