Munich for 1 day - hotel, tour recommendations
Four women (my sister and me and my sister-in-law and a friend of hers) will have just one day in Munich in early December before picking up our christmas market tour. We are looking for a hotel (preferably not one of the big chains) in the Marienplatz or City Center area for 125 to 150 euro per room. Also, does anyone know of a good private guide or tour company that could take us around the area for a half day tour?

I have used Hotel Jedermann before and will do so again in November. It's 4 or 5 blocks from the train station. It's reasonable for November but you could check with them to see what the prices are like in December. The hotel is in an older area sandwiched between office buildings and a busy street but we felt quite safe and they have a great breakfast.
I am not sure if I am supposed to post a link here so you could google it and check them out on the web. They all speak English too at the front desk and are very nice!
Good Luck!

Hi agrebe,
I moved south of Munich last fall, and have a list of hotels I'm slowly working my way through for my visits into the city. Here is my list -- maybe one will work for you!

I think the Platzl looks the best so far!

The Dark History tours are NOT Goth tours, they are tours that present some of the other side of Munich history. Perhaps not so sugar coated as some tours might present, but highly accurate.
The owner and main tour guide is a professional archaeologist that has even worked on Time Team in the UK. He is passionate about Munich history and can put together whatever kind of tour you might be looking for. Whether medieval stuff or WW2, whatever you interests are.

Just got back from out trip (still have to write up a trip report!), but we stayed at the King's Hotel Center in Munich
http://www.kingshotels.de/center.htm
I think we paid about 112 euros (did not include breakfast, but we splurged one day and it was very yummy!). Clean and pleasant hotel. The room was small, but suited our needs just fine - we didn't spend a lot of time there - mainly just to sleep! It's about two blocks from the main train station and from there you can get anywhere in the Munich area. Public transportation in Munich is really great and easy to use!

I hope you're still checking this post. My sister and I and two friends are planning a similar trip. We're also looking for a hotel in Munich for two nights prior to departure. What hotel did you decide on? Also, we're curious as to which tour company you're using for the holiday markets tour? We're booked thru Collette. Also, have you pre-booked any Munich excursions? Thanks for the info, and I hope you have a great trip.

Hi, Carol,
We're on the Collette Tour as well and very much looking forward to it. We haven't settled on a hotel yet, but we're pretty interested in the Platzl and An der Oper. That's definitley the area we want to be in. We'll look into the tours that some folks have mentioned on this post. Unfortunatley, we've only got the one day so we'll make it a busy one!

If you need transportation to Salzburg, read Gary Mc's reply to my post headed "Munich - Many Questions". Collette wants $50 per person for bus transfer and we can take the train for 28 euro total for all four of us (not each)! We've looked at the Platzl and we'll check out the An der Oper, also.

Platzl tends to run about twice the stated budget.
Check out the great deals at Le Meridien. LARGE rooms, well located for convenience at the main station. I have stayed 3x and been very pleased.
We are going for the markets and rates have been under 200USD with breakfast on otel.com and hotels.com.
