Mt. Vesuvius & Pompeii

We are staying in Sorrento and going to Pompeii on a day trip. Would also like to go to Mt. Vesuvius. Is it within walking distance to the ruins at Pompeii or do we need to take another a train (circumvesuviana?). If we want to possibly hike at Mt. Vesuvius on the same day, would we be better to see Pompeii or Herculaneum? Which is closer? Thanks!

You can not walk from pompeii to mt vesuvius. Mt. Vesuvius is a little north of pompeii. I don't know how you would get there by train.

THere was a similar post before.. Pompeii vs. Herculanem.

From sorrento we took the circumvesuviana to pompeii for a day and another day we took it to herculaneum. From herculaneum, there's a bus - SITA bus that goes to Mt. Vesuvius which is how we got there. That bus, took us back to Ercolano to catch the train back. Bus picks you up just outside the Ercolano excavation site.

Mt. Vesuvius is not walking distance from either of these sites.

You've made a good choice, staying in Sorrento, to visit the places you mentioned. Pompeii is closer to Sorrento; Herculaneum (Ercolano) is closer to Naples. When we arrived at the circumvesuviana station (Ercolano) to visit Herculaneum there were a number of drivers in the station asking to take us to Vesuvius. We didn't talk to any of them, so don't know what they charge, but this is a possibility to get there.

Hope you will also take the SITA bus to Positano/Amalfi. The drive along the sea is spectacular and both cities are beautiful and interesting.

Hope this helps.

Most people spend about 4 hours or so to visit Pompeii. From there, it takes maybe 25 minutes to get to the Herculaneum stop on the circumvsuviana, plus however long you ahve to wait for the train. The bus from Herc. up Vesuvius runs about 5 times a day, if memory serves, so chances are you will probably have to wait a while for the bus. Bottom line - it would be doable in a day, jsut barely. The bus ride up takes close to an hour - you stop midway to visit a gift shop for 20 minutes or so.

It is a lot easier and quite practical to visit Herc. and Vesuvius in one day. I think you can see Herc. ruins in 2 hours or so, and from there, the bus stop is jsut a 10 minute walk. We did that, visiting the ruins from about 10 to 12:30, catching a 1 PM bus, and we were down off the mtn. by 4. All of this was from starting and ending from Naples, only 20 minutes from Herc.

We took a tour (Golden Tours) from our hotel in Sorrento. They picked us up at about 8:30am right in front of the hotel and took us to Pompeii. After about 4-5 hours, we had lunch and then they drove us to within about 1,000 ft of the top of Vesuvius so we could make the walk to the top. It was great except for the clouds that had settled on us. We couldn't see into the crater once we reached the top.
