Movies to watch before Paris, London, Rome trip

Hello We are planning our trip to Europe for the month of May. Some of the pre-trip fun includes watching rented movies to see the cities, sights, scenery, and people reflected in movies. The big cities we will visit are London, Rome, Venice and Paris. "Areas" we will visit include the Loire Valley, Normandy, NE Brittany, French and Italian Rivieras, Provence, Lake Como, and Tuscany. Ideas for available, interesting movies to rent and watch?

There are several long threads here about pre-trip movies. Search on the word movie.

For Rome you absolutely need to watch ROMAN HOLIDAY. It brings the city to life.

There are a number of looong threads on movies, some by city and some by country. Try searches like movies AND paris or movies AND Italy.

I agree with Richard on "Roman Holiday" for Rome. Keeping with the Audrey Hepburn theme, there's "Charade" and "Funny Face" for Paris. Then there's "Summertime" for Venice featuring Katherine Hepburn. And for the French Riviera, "To Catch a Thief" with Grace Kelly. A fun movie featuring NY, Paris & Venice is Woody Allen's "Everybody Says I Love You." It's funny, I've just come back from London & can't think of one classic featuring that great city.

Other posters have reported that the muppet movies & even the Olsen twin movies actually show off the cities very well. I also recall there's a website that allows you to plug in a location & gives you lists of films. If I can find it I'll post back.
Sounds like a wonderful trip!

Yowza! You're traveling for all of May and all of June as well? (referenced on your posting of http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34488589 for the dates June 2-July 2) Don't you need me as your sherpa? Maybe I could carry and set up the DVDs for you, location by location!

I listed ix of the 100+ on http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...mp;tid=4239003

Easy additions for other locations, off the top of my head: Notting Hill, French Kiss, Le Divorce, Under the Tuscan Sun, and A Month by the Lake (whose title was correctly listed on another good and lengthy thread - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...mp;tid=4239003 - - after I botched it on another thread)

Best wishes,

Rex

p.s. Did you get my e-mail about 2005 or 2006? (wink...)

Rex - are you emailing posters privately? If so you're probably undermining this forum!!!

Yes - there are threads on books too - lots of them and really good ones. Sometimes it's better to bring up the old posts since not everyone wants to respond to threads they've already shared into on.

Here's the link to a great thread on books. You have to use the link to get to it since searching on the title doesn't work.

For action movies:

"Ronin" with Robert DeNiro, for car chases - best ever on film - and action scenes in Paris, Nice and Arles.

"French Connection 2" for Marseilles, though I don't think it's a particularly good movie.

"Day of the Jackal" for various location in France and a little bit of Italy.

For Paris - 'Amelie' starring Audrey Tatou. For Venice, a much older movie: 'Don't Look Now' Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland (dir Nick Roeg).
They are both 5 star films too, regardless of location.

For Tuscany 'Tea with Mussolini' with a wonderful ensemble cast (4*)!!
There must be loads of films set in London but I'm finding it hard to think of one that is particularly full of location shots. For its own sake as much as anything try 'Truly, Madly, Deeply' Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson (dir Anthony Minghella).
Perhaps better than movies would be made for TV dramas - eg 'The House of Cards' starring Ian Richardson.

For London, "Love Actually", for Paris "Amelie". And two good books are Dan Browns' "Angels and Demons" (Rome) and "The DaVinci Code" (London and Paris).

Ciao,
Carol

mclaurie, if you can't think of a good old classic for London, how about "Mary Poppins"!

My picks:
Rome: Ettore Scola's "La Famiglia" and "We Loved Each Other So Much" + Fellini's Roma.

Paris: Eric Rohmer's movies such as "Rendezvous in Paris" or "Boyfriends and Girlfriends".

Venice- Visconti's "Death in Venice" - especially the first scenes where Dirk Bogarde is on the boat nearing Venice with Mahler's 5th symph, 4th mvmt in the background - ah, momentary heaven!

As a Londoner, I can't help worrying about what this selection of films might do to your expectations...! What about 'Sliding Doors' - just what a difference is made by getting or not getting the tube....

I loved sliding doors too! For Italy, "Only You". For Paris, here's an oldie, but one of my favorites, "French Postcards". For both, "A Little Romance".
And if you want to have a real laugh, try and get a copy of "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium"!
