Sam--are you going to give any stats or source? I did read recently (in Time or newsweek maybe(neither of which I trust or like) that the percentage of minorities killed in action was not as high as some claimed for years--I think blacks were around 14% --about the same as their % of population. I kind of doubt that, and think it is probaby higher though I have not seen anything one way or the other. Now Sam would you not agree that most guys who legally avoided the draft were rich kids in elite colleges?

XXXX,

Yes I would agree, but the real interesting factor that raises the % is the number of officers killed.

The officers came primarily from middle class and up families, because many of them came from the ROTC programs on college campuses.

And we all know the average life span for a 2nd Lt. in Nam.

Uncle Sam

Well...if you are asking will europe be improved as a place to visit..I would say yes. The places in the world where old neighborhoods and architecture see little development is in the more "third world" areas. Cuba is a good example..Even here in U.S..you can look at cities like Philadelphia to see that some very beautiful historical and architecturally interesting places have been preserved (although poorly) because people were too poor to develop them.

Uncle Sam - you'll be a more effective debator if you don't automatically insert the word "liberal" in your diatribe - it such a cliched term.

Why do you always work Bono into your view support the elimination of third world debt. What - because you listen to U2 that somehow makes you a moderate? Talk about cliched...

Observer,

I'll take your point under advisement.

BTW, I'm not a moderate, nor do I want to be called a moderate...I'm a conservative. To me a moderate is just soimeone that is unwilling to take a stand for anything, a wishy washy go along to get along.

I don't always reference Bono, OTOH, it is the only somewhat liberal position that I support!

That is a shame Uncle Sam, cause the true good Uncle Sam is a die-hard, good-hearted liberal!

Uncle Sam, you have a Master's? Well, you must have been asleep in your English classes because it is, "who's counting," and "middle-class-and-up families."

I went to Dartmouth. They learned us right up there.

I'm going to bed now.

Hey John G-let us not be so picky--this is a chat forum. Anyway, you could have gone to some community college for all we know and care!

This sounds like an eugenics debate to me. Let me call Hitler and see if he wants to look into his magic ball for the answer.

I use and like the Hotel Cvrystal on Kantstrasse, one station on the S Bahn from Berlin Zoo.

There is some disgusting racism lurking in this correspondence, but I shall answer the question as put. For a period after people of other cultures come in they remake their culture here in England. If they meet racism or unemployment the children do this, too. But this does not last. With education and prosperity children and grandchildren slide into the host culture. I doubt they ever lose all trace of their home culture. For example, most descendents of immigrant Jews from central Europe are still Jews ? though I admit that marriage with gentiles is growing apace among them. I may be wrong here: we have wholly merged the Hugenots who came to us in 1688.

So to tourism. Nobody outside Bosnia tears down old buildings because they are of a different culture. In western Poland there are plenty of fine old churches, once German Lutheran, now Polish Catholic, and tourists go happily to see them. In Delhi and Madras governments treasure monuments of past Moghul and British empires, and again the tourists come in busloads. But I do not expect even that picture. Rather, I expect roughly the Jewish history: that families recently arrived will move towards the host culture. We already have well-acclimatised Hindu capitalists, and I heard last week that there are dating agencies in Britain whose special skill is to set up arranged marriages for grandchildren of South Asian immigrants, children who refuse to let their grandma do the job, but who like to stick with arranged marriage. They are edging over. Which brings me towards my main point. The present mix of cultures here in London gives new attractions for those tourists who can think beyond Big Ben and Madame Tussaud?s. Curry lovers like me head for Drummond Street and East Street and eat well for 15 dollars. Those who want cutting edge clothes and music take the tube to Brixton, and stroll among the Caribbean vegetable barrows (I have on disc a guide to Brixton: please ask). In Paris those who know check Pariscope (http://www.pariscope.fr) for extraordinary and good music from North Africa, and for blend music that draws from several cultures at once, as jazz did in America in the thirties. Such tourists should seize their time. Our parish church no longer offers delicious curried goat at celebrations: the West Indian Wives Group (oh how politically incorrect a name now) has ceased, as the ladies died.

Meanwhile, those who want quaint old Britain can readily find it, though the room cleaner in the lovely old country inn may well be Phillipino.

I look forward to replies.

Ben Haines

Thanks Ben for another civilized answer. I think the only thing I have ever agreed with Pat Buchanan about was his statement that he didn't deserve those 3,500+ votes he got in Dade County. While he may be a demagog, he was truthful about the post - SELECTION scenario.
It doesn't matter if white europeans will be out-numbered by middle-easterners on the continent. White people are genetically more intelligent and rational, therefore maintaining politcal and economic dominance over inferior immigrants. Then again, western europe's politicians may realise that the immigrant vote is not worth the destruction of their culture and values (France) and may start to tighten their immigration policies before its too late.

"Shirac"? I think "Le Pen" suits your views much better. Buchanan is an idiot. Any ideas he espouses are designed to be inflammatory. Ben Haines, thank you for your response. It's refreshing to read something so rational and well-articulated. Uncle Sam, being a moderate does not equate to fence-sitter. I think a moderate is far more open-minded than those who sit on extreme ends of the political spectrum. Your ideas about conservative ideas being practical? I'd love to hear your argument for that. They've always been about "PROFIT NOW" regardless of the consequences.

Of course it will be worse, look at what is happening already. People should stay in their own countries and try to change them for the better, not run to another country and try to change it to suit and cater to them. Someone runs to another country and then howls that he wants welfare. Doen't make sense.
In the days when people were setting up the US they had different ideals.

Uncle Sam, do you even KNOW that the term "liberal" in Europe means something quite different from the way you mean it? Europeans and educated Americans understand that "liberal" is often used to mean a philosophy of free-market enterprise that you probably espouse -- the very opposite of the way you keep using it. It's really a pity there will probably be people here who think you represent intelligent America.

All I can tell you, friends, is that somehow the greatness of America is supposedly the accommodation of all, including the Uncle Sams who insist that they, alone, know what true Americanism is supposed to be and represent it with such empty-headed, knee-jerk, name-calling rantings.

To the original question: no, it won't be better, it would be nice to delude ourselves into thinking so, for politically correct purposes, but in reality it will be much worse. Just like in America now it is much worse.

Fran,

The fact that you are reading and quoting a book written by Pat Buchanan does not really say much about your character.

Oh puleeezzzz!!! I have been to Europe so many times. Each time I go it is from the mouths of the Europeans complaining about the immigrants. Also the blatant anti-semitism just blows me away.France is drowning in a sea of immigrants, many of whom do not want to assimilate. I think it is time for a radical change in Europe.
