Moulin Rouge?
Has anyone been to the Moulin Rouge for the late show? I'm tempted despite hearing how tacky and touristy it is. (I do have lots of other sights way higher on my list!)I don't want to book ahead as after a day of sight-seeing we might not feel up to it, thought we'd take each evening as we feel. I saw a program about it on the travel channel a few months ago (they did a couple of shows on Paris), and it seemed very campy, but entertaining! I think I'd rather eat somewhere else before the show as I understand the food isn't that great.
Look forward to reading your responses...
PS !!
I have been doing LOTS of research about my trip: guidebooks, magazine articles, etc. But it is nice to hear a personal point of view too. So please don't treat this question disparagingly. I'm writing this after reading some of the other threads!

My group of nine cousins went to the Moulin Rouge for dinner and the show on our one night in Paris on the way home from Italy. I think there would have been far nicer ways to spend an evening in Paris, but variety shows with or without bare breasts are really not my thing. Most of the others enjoyed themselves immensely. The dinner was not only not good, but we were crammed together at the table so closely that we had to sit sideways to eat, and the service was perfunctory at best, truly awful at worst. Even my 17-year-old son whispered to me at one point "And you made me get dressed up for THIS?" I repeat, most of the other cousins thought the whole thing was lots of fun, but I certainly wouldn't go again.

Thanks Karen,
Thats the kind of evening I am afraid of. I think I probably saw enough on the tv show! It would be fun to go somewhere like that where you could stay for as long/little as you like without spending a ton of money. (walk in, have a drink, leave when yo've had enough)

Traveled to Paris last Spring and opted for the Lido Show. Friends had seen both Moulin Rouge and Lido. According to them, the Lido was much classier, and the Moulin Rouge on the tacky side.
We decided to go the whole nine yards and do the Dinner Show and thought it was great!! Food was very good, good service, and the show lasted 2 hours.
They have the option of Show only with 1/2 bottle of Champagne (Moet) per person or Show and 2 cocktails. It's a Las Vegas type production and well done.
Hope you enjoy your trip to Paris. We can't wait to go back!
Bon Soir

I did it last year because I have always wanted to see what it was all about. It was okay, entertaining. I would suggest only do it if you have nothing else planned, you have the money to kill. Its expensive and it's something you really want to do. I would not do it again it's a one time deal.

Do the Moulin Rouge!
Was it great? No.
But it is one of the oldest entertainment shows still around whose name still intrigues so many.
I would not go for dinner but rather the champagne show.
Interesting, tacky, fun, and Toulouse Lautrec still wanders about!
I've been told that the Lido show was usually of better quality than the Moulin Rouge show. I went to the former once, since I benefited from discounted prices (my gf was working there..no..not as a dancer). I thought the show was really well done, but I wouldn't pay full price for it.

Something weird I learnt from her was that they seated people according to their nationality (can't remember if it applied to individuals too or only to groups). For instance, the italians would be sitted at the front (they are supposed to appreciate to have a close look on the dancers) while the germans would be sitted at the back (they are supposed to prefer having an overall view of the choreography).

It really doesn't matter. Even though the Moulin Rouge website says that "elegant" dress is required, the truth is that the packed-in tourists are wearing anything and everything. The men in our party wore dress shirts and slacks (no ties) and were among the better dressed.
