We've stayed at the Northumberland House and both the location and experience was great. We rented through LSE Top Floor (http://www.lsevacations.co.uk/Home.a....P2C21hpx.dpbs). It's too early to make a reservation there, yet, but do keep them in mind. I think you'd be happy in that location.
The other budget place we've stayed at several times--fabulous location--is The Seven Dials Hotel, near Covent Garden and the theater district. The rooms are very small, and I'd recommend paying a bit more and go for their triple ensuite.
