Go to the rooftops! The rooftop of Gallery Lafayette has great views. One of my favorites rooftop bars is Hotel Terrasse in the 18th (12-14 rue Joseph de Maistre). Not only great cocktails but great views. My profile picture was taken there.

Thanks a lot everyone for the recommendations, it was a great trip.
Printemps, Gallery Lafayette, all had brilliant views, plus the views from Sacre Couer, then the Opera building too was my favorite. The walk along the Seine was just brilliant!
Here's my trip report:

Nice report ashwinb. Just so you know, it is Sacre Coeur and not Sacre Couer (coeur means "heart" so you don't want to twist that word )

Maybe I'm late to reply, but if you need pretty buildings which are not necessarily palaces and monuments, I find that the Monmartre quarter is full of peaceful cute houses, not in a Disney-esque sense, but in a real life quarter sense.

Here's my Paris gallery of photos. Most of them are labeled as to building and/or location.

Go to Canal Saint Martin after dark and photograph the bridges and the water in the canal. There will also be lots of people hanging around.
