Jim,

I have just left the Mosel/Rhine area to go to the Black Forrest area. The best part of the Rhine to see on the water is between Bacharach & St. Goar. There are ships that run round trip for about 18M.

We stayed at the Hotel Krannenturm in Bacharach. There are several pensions also.

There is a nice bike path on this part of the river. I did not see one while driving by the Mosel.

If you are driving to Koln (Shrine of the Three Magi) or Trier (oldest roman ruins in Germany) go early!!!! These are very busy cities and the traffic is heavy. My sister said though that they did Trier on a Sunday and there was almost no traffic.

Stay in Bacharach - lots of pensions for very reasonable rates. Check out www.loreleyvalley.com. I'd recommend biking from Bacharach to Bingen also. The bike path runs right along the Rhine and is fairly flat so you won't get tired. Stop every few kilometers and hike through a castle. We hopped on the ferry at Bingen and crossed over to Rudesheim to spend the rest of the day. All trains along the Rhine have cars for bicycles so it's easy to jump on a train if you get too far and don't want to ride back.
Jim, My wife (52) and I(61)returned from this trip 3 weeks ago, we cycled down the Rhine and up the Mosel to Luxembourg. We travel solo, all our gear on our bikes. The only hotel we booked was the 1st night (@ Titisee in the Black Forest) and the last night at the airport Sheraton (an extravagance for us) in Frankfurt. We never had a problem with lodging (or anything else) and we prefer pensions or small 2* hotels, trying to keep the budget to $50-$60. We take our bikes with us from Dallas. If you would like more info or the names of places we stayed please email us, happy to share our itinerary. We cycle on average 40-50K per day.
