"Book in advance to get a cheaper rate": yes, you should. 1 month earlier and you can get to 50% discount.
"Which train line": Alfa Pendular is the fastest. Departs from Campanhã. You can use the ticket from a regional trains from São Bento (at the historical center) and change lines at Campanhã (that is the major train station). The ride through São Bento to Campanhã is very cenic, and takes only 3 minutes. All trains departing from São Bento stop at Campanhã. You have lifts, in case your luggage is heavy. And you can leave the Alfa Pendular train at Oriente or Santa Apolónia, in Lisbon. Price is the same, so it's your option.
