More Paris Shopping Questions

Hi and forgive me, please, after the other long Paris Shopping thread. I have a few questions, please, if anyone can help. We have been to Paris 4 times in the last 8 years, but these are a few of the things I've missed, in terms of shopping/window shopping.

1. Other than the Grand Epicerie at Bon Marche, what is the other rather grand department store food hall?

2. I would like to go window shopping in the 6th. I want to look at stunning things that I can neither afford nor fit in. Any suggestions for this?

3. I would like to walk from Place Vendome in any direction, but would like to take in the kind of window shopping I mentioned above. Any suggestions?

4. We aren't far from rue Montorgueil. I want to food shop, but I believe the majority of stores aren't open all day, everyday. Is that correct? When would be the time to NOT go there?

1. Lafayette Gourmet

2. I'd go to the 8th instead-- Dior, Lacroix, Nina Ricci.

3. Rue de la Paix or rue St-Honore

4. I don't know the times not to go, but Sunday morning is a good time to go.

2. There are lots of pretty shops on the streets around St. Suplice in the 6th.

3. Place Madeline also has lovely shops--high end.

4. I was there around 11 on a Friday--all the shops were open--gorgeous chocolate shop, can't remember the name. No open-air stalls that day so don't know when or if that occurs.

The hat shop on rue St. Suplice, a block west of rue de Seine and on the south side of the street. Happy Travels!

1. La Grand Epicerie and Gourmet Lafayette are absolute fun. Be sure to try Café Malongo.

Other fun spots are:
Fauchon
Hédiard
Boutique Maille
La Maison de la Truffe
Mariage Frères
Pierre Hermé
And be sure to check out Da Rosa Epicerie-Cantine while shopping in the 6th.

2. There are plenty of charming shops on the streets of the 6th between Le Bon Marché and Galerie Commerciale Le Marché Saint-Germain and continuing along Boulevard Saint-Germain. The shopping is endless. However, for really high-end, hit Avenue Montaigne, rue Royale, rue du Faubourg St Honoré, and Place Vendôme.

3. What Fifi said.

4. Most places have a website these days. If hours aren't listed, I'm sure you could email for info or search the numerous food blogs.

Thanks all. I'm probably overreaching my own abilities. I have a bunch of "serious" touring lined up, and a cold, and I'm still recovering from the two broken feet I collected on Dec. 10. But while I am out and about, I am going to try and take in a bit of shop porn.

I vote for Mariage Freres ,too. There's one that's on a side street to St. Andres des Arts, from what I can remember. I went to it some years ago. There's also one over in the Marais.

Also Maison de Miel, about a block up the street from Fauchon. It's a shop that only sells honey which makes great gifts. Who doesn't like honey? I think the name of the street is rue Vignon. It spirals off of the street that Fauchon is on. Happy Travels!

Alex Lobrano seems to be downgrading Le Grand Epicerie. The best piece of cake I had last time in Paris came from there. Should I try Gourmet Lafayette instead?:

MademoiselleFifi,

I have read several of your posts and consider you knowledgable.

Would you kindly suggest 2 different
places for me.

1)
A cafe that is unassuming, full of locals, off the beaten path, where my husband and I could have a nice meal and wine for less than 60 euro total. A place that is quaint, nothing modern. Somewhere very artsy.. paintings on the wall, dogs lying on the floor..
Lunchtime would be fine.

2)
My BBF hates shopping. Can you suggest a street or small market where there are several shops/booths that offer inexpensive handcrafted items such as jewelry, scarfs, lace, spices, foodie stuff...

This will be my 2nd time to Paris an DH first. we will be staying in Marias but can use metro to go all over city.

thanks so much..

p.s.
anyone else have suggestions

Thanks Andrew.

We have pretty much been through hell here in the past few months. And because I have extremely ancient parents, I guess there is more to come.

A nice time would be wonderful and your wish is very much appreciated. Thank you.

If your window shopping porn includes more than clothes, I always find a walk along the Rue du Bac from Bon Marche to Blvd Raspail rewarding, down on one side of the street, back on the other. Lots of small shops with interesting merchandise along with neighborhood shops. Then you can turn down into Sevres Babylone and get serious!

The designer boutiques aroung St Sulpice are full of eye candy, and Rue des Francs Bourgeois in the Marais has lots of small trendy shops that make a good stroll despite the traffic.

dandj2,

I'm not the person to ask about where to eat-- I graze so much on street food on the go (croissants, fallafels, baguette sandwiches, sweet or savory crepes, chouquettes, mini-quiches, macarons, roasted chestnuts...) that I'm never hungry when meal time comes around. On my last trip, I only had 6 sit-down meals in 11 days, and four of those were to see the interiors of landmark buildings. I've photographed lots of cute dogs at cafes but don't remember exactly where they were. I hope other Fodorites come up with some suggestions-- your list of criteria sure sounds good.

What's BBF? Mom and I enjoyed the Marche Grenelle (Wedns and Sundays) and rue Mouffetard/Place Monge. I also loved a busy street market on a steep slopey street in Montmartre (with some good inexpensive shoe stores nearby, and less touristy than Mouffetard) but can't find the name of the street now (anybody here know this place?). The food at rue de Buci is more expensive, but nearby there are lots of stores with cute scarves and accessories, and some boutiques with unique but inexpensive sweaters that always draw compliments.

When we stayed at Rue du Cherche-Midi and Rue Sainte Placide area this past fall, we found all kinds of little shops to window gawk or browse into within a 3 - 4 block radius. Girls found a shoe store that if there was enough money that they would have bought it out. They also found a wedding dress store that we practically had to drag them out of. I found a small butcher shop that I spent 45 minutes talking with the owner and tasting. My buddy found a hardware store that was more like a 5 and dime that we all had a blast in.

Highlight was a perfume store that the girls had custom perfume made for them on Rue de Grenelle.

It would take some back research to find the names / exact locations.

SW corner of Rue du Cherche-Midi and Rue Sainte Placide. Adjacent to pharmacy. Great cafe directly across the street.
