More Croatia questions--Zagreb and Plitvice

I am finalizing the arrangements for my Croatia trip in July. I still have some questions.

I made a reservation at the Hotel Jezero in Plitvice, but now I'm thinking that perhaps I should have chosen the Plitvice, based on reviews. I can still change this; any thoughts?

I need a car rental place in the center of Zagreb that would be close to the Regent Hotel and is open on Sundays. I was told that the Regent had a Sixt office there, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I rented a car in Zagreb from Sixt in October. I picked mine up at the Four Points by Sheraton (which I walked to from the Westin, where I was staying). I don't know where the Sixt office is now, but I'd be surprised if it had moved. I also picked mine up on a Sunday morning, the minute they opened. (I got their last car, and lucky for me, it had papers to drive into BiH in it - I had forgotten to ask!!!). My car was a decent economy car, fun to drive a five speed again, but the car itself smelled like an ash tray It had scratches on it; make sure you take pictures of your car when you pick it up with your digital camera.

If you want to verify where the Sixt office really is, call them. Or call the Regent. Or call the Four Points and ask them if there's still a Sixt next door. Only a few cents/minute with Skype. Or just email them.

I drove directly from Zagreb to Plitvice (easy drive especially on Sunday) and stayed at the Hotel Plitvice. No internet there, but I was able to use the free WiFi in the lobby of the Jezero. The lobby of the Jezero is MUCH nicer than that of the Plitvice, which looks like it was last remodeled in the 1970s in the communist era. I didn't see a room at the Jezero, though - maybe the rooms aren't much nicer. When I was staying (only one night), it was about $40 more per night.

The Hotel Plitvice's rooms are VERY average - not bad, clean, but about the level of a nice Motel 6. Of course, the retro design makes it much more interesting than a dumpy Motel 6. I'd stay at the Hotel Plitvice again for sure, though - it was fine and extremely convenient, just way overpriced. You pay for the convenience. I ate breakfast there (very basic). I found a pizza place/bar just south of the park that I drove to for dinner.

As I may have mentioned a few times here already: if you stay at a park hotel like the Hotel Plitvice or Jezero, you can get your park ticket stamped and visit the park on multiple days for the price of a single day's ticket. I did this and that partly made up for the high price I was paying for the location.

I might add that there do seem to be different quality levels of rooms at the Hotel Plitvice; I had the LOWEST (budget) quality. I didn't see the other types of rooms.

i booked hotel bellevue...back in june 2006
went for the price cos we were only going overnight
when we drove up however, there were japanese tourists in and the hotel offered us an upgrad to hotel jezero which was supposedly 3 star

we had room 328
it was pretty basic..a little shabby but comfortable..no bath in the bathroom but that was ok for us
great breakfasts though and the staff was
wonderful but service slow in the enormous loveboat style dining room
the maitre d' looked like bill murray lol and our waitress was lovely...pointed out all the dishes and suggested quantities so we didnt overorder..her name was Durda...still remember her well
it was very reasonable price wise...

I stayed in the Hotel Plitvice, which was fine. We did not have a car, so liked the convenience of walking right into the park and having the cafeteria. If I were visiting the area with a car, I would seek out a sobe or some other accommodation in the area. It seems like it was here on Fodors where I read about a charming b&b in the area.

Andrew. I am gling to the park in October also. I seem to have read that only one entrance is open during the Fall months.
Do you know if both entrances 1 and 2 were open since you were there in October.
Thanks.

I was there in early October. The park entrance right at the hotels was open, of course. I don't recall whether the other entrance was closed, but I am pretty sure it was open.

We will be there in early Oct. also. I thought I read that it is better to start at entrance 2 and walk against the crowds. But maybe in October the crowds won't be so big and also since we cannot go until about 1:00 they will be gone mainly from entrance one.

Once you are inside the park, you can choose to walk whichever way you want and you can take a tram to get to one of several "starting" points.

Have to do my homework. We are only going to have until dark and I would like to make the best of it.

I found the guides near the ticket booth to be very helpful. There is an information board listing recommended routes based on the amount of time one wants to spend in the park, and the guides will help people develop unique plans if those recommendations don't seem to suit or if you want to avoid following the same route that everyone else is following.

Andrew--Yes, I contacted the Regent. They have told me twice Sixt is at the Regent. However, Sixt says that is not the case. The phone number the hotel gave me is at the airport. There definitely still is a Sixt at the Sheraton....so the mystery continues. I'll just use that if it is close to the Regent or look for another downtown rental agency.

And perhaps I'll just keep my current hotel reservation in Plitvices. Not sure that the difference between the two hotels is that much.

jag1jag1. I just reserved a car through Uni-rent in Zagreb. It says they have a downtown office, but I do not know where it is since I am renting at the airport.
The price was very good. Here is the email address
[email protected]
They were very prompt in their reply. They may be able to tell you if the downtown office is convienient for you.
Good luck.
