Montmartre Restaurants

Someone in our party insists on eating in Montmartre one night .... can you suggest a place with terrific food. I've not checked the Cheap Eats book yet, but will. Knowing your experience would be very valuable. Thanks, and ciao.

This will be an interesting post. I always say it is very difficult to get a bad meal in Paris, but Montmarte seems to be the exception with me. We've eaten there three times and had really bad overpriced meals all three times. The one was the highly recommended place just off the artist's square that has the huge terrace and the spectacular view. That was probably the worst. The other two were what looked like nice typical brasseries and they both had poor service, worse food, and were horribly overpriced. One day we did have a great (but again very overpriced) lunch at a place that was below the "mount" actually beneath an old mill. Anyone with good suggestions?

La Galerie
16, rue Tholoze
75018 Paris
Tel: 01-42-59-25-76
A wonderful little local restaurant tucked away on a side street in Montmartre. Ten tables, very French, very good food. Two dinner menus - 139/159FF.

I really don't remember the name of the place. But if you were in the square of artists surrounded by tacky cafes, you would walk to the south and along the building, then out through the restaurant to a huge tiered terrace. That's the place. We had been told it was the "finest place in Paris" -- yea, right.

You may wish to investigate Lapin Agile, 22 rue des Saules, a fine cabaret; Patachou, 9 Place de Terte; Chartier, 7 rue de Faubourg-Montmarte, two good restaurants. The area made its reputation focusing on other appetites. For instance, you might wish to dine at the Moulin Rouge, some say is named after the movie, 82 blvd. de Clichy; not inexpensive, though some find it filling.

I love Chartier - but I do believe it's not in Montmartre, it is on rue Montmartre. (Here's a way to gauge this on your map - to get to Chartier you'd get off the metro at about Richelieu-Drouot, whereas if you wanted to get to the heart of Montmartre, at Sacre Coeur/Place du Tertre), the closest metro stop is either Abbesses or Anvers.)

As for the earlier post about the Moulin Rouge being "named after the movie" and "not expensive", I am thoroughly confused!

JB: you are correct about Chartier, though it's in the 9th Arrondissement. The reference to the cabaret being named after the movie was a tepid effort at humor. I said the Moulin Rouge was "not inexpensive." It's overpriced, in my opinion and worth no more than one visit. Less confused, I hope?
