Montalcino Hotel Paulo?

I haven't seen very many informative posts about a good hotel or accommodation in Montalcino but I have my heart set on staying there as a Tuscany base. Would like a nice room with a view of the hills within walking distance of restaurants, shops.
I've seen The Vecchia Oliviera Hotel web site but haven't read many actual posts from anyone who has stayed there.

It will be winter so a pool isn't necessary.

You might want to try this site which has much information about Montalcino.
http://www.castellobanfi.com/toc.html

You may have already seen my trip report with my comments on Vecchia Oliviera, but in case you didn't, we loved it. The location is terrific, walking distance to all of the shops & restaurants in Montalcino (Montalcino is small & delightful). We had a double for 300,000 lire ($150) with a great view of the surrounding countryside, lovely hand-painted murals on the walls, and a very nice bathroom. Breakfast is included in the price and is very good. Parking is free. The owners speak English and are pleased to advise on restaurants, daytrips, etc. We thought the place was absolutely charming.

The above is nice, but if you want to go native and experience Montalcino from the heart of town, then try the charming small 3 star hotel called Il Giglio. An authentic Albergo and risorante for only about $70/nite. We had lunch there last spring and found it to be the real thing.

my family rented a villa in Castelnuovo dell'Abate last summer. This town is about 4.5 miles south of Montalcino. It is a lovely area and a good base for exploring the Brunello region. Make sure to visit Sant Antimo. There's excellent pizza at Petto's Pizza in Montalcino, and we practically lived at the Co-op for groceries

About 2 years ago my wife and I spent 3 nites at the Hotel Dei Capitani in Montalcino. The price was 'right' about $100/ nite, and the room was well above average. The views were stunning (get a room in the back with a small balcony).
The morning fog rising over the hills, what seemed to be miles below us, is something you won't forget.
