Mont St. Michel question

I am seriously tempted by the Chateau Bouceel that several of you recommended. My question, if one sleeps off the Mont is it still possible to stay for dinner, walk the streets at night after the crowds leave, or does one have to leave before the tide comes in. I know in all the novels I've read people were always getting stranded either on the Mont or on the mainland or washed away as they fled. wondering if times have changed.

There is a causeway (raised roadway) that links the mainland to the mont at all times.

Over the next few years, the causeway is being turned into a bridge so that the sand will stop accumulating, and all private vehicles will be banished to the mainland with some sort of shuttle service. I presume that hotel guests will still have the right to drive all the way to the Mont and park there, however.

and IMO be sure to walk or drive over the causeway to the mainland at night to see the Mont and its crowning basilica all serenly illuminated - something you cannot see by staying on the island all night.
