I would rent a car. However, you don't say if you want to turn around and come back to LeHavre. Are you on a cruise?

We went on a Monday--apparently open that day b/c it was a bank holiday-- and it was so packed w/French tourists that we could barely move around the place.

We will be in Le Havre on a Tuesday for the day only as we will board the ship latter that night.

It is very easy to get there by public transportation. If I remember correctly, you take the train to Vernon and then the bus is right there to take you to Giverny. VERY worth seeing!

That is the way we went, Topsy, and it was very easy with one *huge* exception. As I said, the place was overrun w/French tourists and the buses were unable to accomodate the crowds and people were vying for the very few taxis. For some unexplainable reason, the buses only took about 3 sets of people and then disappeared. People were attempting to get there, and back, on foot. The house is several miles outside of Vernon. My caveat in all of this, is just to be sure that you don't go there on a French holiday week-end!

You can easily get to Vernon by train from Le Havre via Rouen to Vernon and back. Very easy and will take about an hour or so. Schedules at www.voyages-sncf.com
