Milos Island, Greece help needed please

Hi, I am wondering if anyone here knows where the best deal for car rental is on the island of Milos. Will be arriving Sept. 29 noon by plane and departing Oct. 4 early morning 7 a.m. by ferry. Staying in Pollonia with free hotel/port transfers available if we want them.

Also, would love to hear of any good places to eat in both Pollonia and Adaamas. A comfortable food budget for us is $9-$12 euros/pp per meal with an occasional splurge. We don't need alchohol with our meals and don't eat any shellfish, octopus, shrimp, just regular type fish from the seafood family for us please.

Any tips or comments on what you liked disliked on Milos including activities are all really welcome the more feedback the better. Travel dates already in stone. Thank you for taking the time!

Sorry we did not rent a car in Milos so I am no help there other than to say we certainly would rent one the next time. The bus schedule is set up for locals and not the best for tourists.
Milos has lots of great beaches many only accessible by car. The main town of Adams is good for a few hours but the town of Plaka is well worth a day exploring and perhaps lingering over dinner to see the sunset.
Splurge on one of the boat cruises from Adamas harbour. We took the full day half way around the island trip and it was a great way to start the holiday getting a feel for the island. We took Adventure sailing tours which is a sailboat with max passengers of 10 I think. They are the only one offering snorkeling equipment as part of the tour package. That was a highlight for us particularly during the long stop at the sea caves at Kleftiko.
The catacomb tour was interesting but if you keep you eyes open and take one of the little used paths off of the stairway path down to the catacombs you will find several catacombs just there ready to explore. Better than the tour. There is a second path that heads out toward the sea side where you come to massive stone walls which turned out to be part of the Amphitheatre. We were able to walk right to it on the archaeological dig site level. That was a treat.
Here are some pictures.

Stanbr- What a treat your Milos photography is! Great composition and beautiful colors! We will definitely be doing a full-day boat trip on Milos and some catacomb exploration. The directions you've given sound great. Thanks a billion for taking the time to share this info from your trip.

Just one more question: in your Milos photo album I noticed a snapshot of an adorable bakery, is it okay to ask what town that's in? We will most likely be self catering our breakfasts because of an available kitchenette in our room and that place looks fun to try.

Thanks for your kind comments. Just to be specific we took a full day, half way around the island sailing trip. There are full day all around the island trips but as far as I can tell those trips just sail on by and don't give you all that time to explore places like Kleftiko. I stand to be corrected on that point but that was my impression.

As for that bakery it is going to be one of the highlight stories on our trip report(whenever I get to it). We too self cater breakfast and lunch so this was a great find. We just happened to stumble into it as we walked back to the hotel after dinner one night. It has a wood fired oven and is just packed with local sweet goodies and loaves of bread. The lady behind the counter was lovely, spoke good English and made all sorts of recommendations particularly on the local specialities.
When we decided to buy something she would go over to her cash register bend down and from some secret place under the counter would pull out a small hot desert on a piece of wax paper as a gift. One day it was hot chocolate cake then next something with cheese, it was different every day. I swear she gave us more value than what we actually purchased over the week. There is a table out front and we bought lunch there one day and just spent quality time watching the locals go by.
As to finding the bakery it is in Adamas. It is on the far edge of town near the taxi stand and bus stop just back from the ocean.
From the sea walk past the taxi stand and at the first road to the right ( the main road heading out of town) In about less than 100 meters along that road you will come to a small bridge. It doesn't even look like vehicles can pass under it. Get off the main road onto that road called Konstaninou Kostiska ( I have no idea if there is a sign) but that particular road is distinctive because there is a main road and a stand of trees separating a smaller road. There is nothing else like it. The bakery is about 100 meters up that road. If you need directions when you get there ask where the old Atlantic grocery store used to be. It is beside that location. My directions are based on finding that road on foot. I am not sure but I do not think there was a way to turn left with a vehicle off of the main road. Once you spot Konstaninou though it will be obvious of how to drive to it.

I see that you are not looking for alcohol for your dinners but I can say that the local house wines are quite good and a liter will cost about 6 to 8 euros. Thats a bargin where I come from. Bottled wine is fairly expensive at tavernas.

There is a good grocery store with lots of produce, canned goods and liter and a half bottles of wine on the main road heading out of town quite near the mining museaum. I did not see anything like it in Pollonia.

Have a great time.

Your a treasure trove of information. Thanks for the details! In Santorini on the approach to Perissa I had a similar experience in a bakery there... wonder if that's a local custom in the Cyclades- its a very warm gesture. Looking forward to Greece!

Hi, we hired a car on Milos for about 2 days. It was good to be able to get around when we wanted and not wait for a bus, especially as it was August and scorching hot. The owner of our hotel in Adamas recommended a car hire place and we went there, I think it was 50 euro per day, petrol was the only extra cost and as the island is tiny, I think we paid 7 euro for petrol!

There are loads of car hire places and travel agencies along the seafront where the ferries come in, sorry I don't recall the name of the place we rented from but wouldn't particularly recommend them anyway. We said numerous times we wanted airconditioning as it was so hot on the island and were assured that was fine. Well the car may have had aircon but it certainly didn't work. We considered taking the car back but it was all too hard and we knew we'd lose more of the day fiddling about so just sweated a lot.

We've been to quite a few of the Greek islands and Milos was not really a favourite. It lacked the charm of some of the other islands. We spent a nice half day at Pollonia, swimming and sitting in a cafe, it's a very casual place with a reasonable beach though too many cigarette butts for my liking. The beach at Adamas, Lagada, was filthy with butts.

The best meal we had was in a side street running away from the port in Adamas, it was a tiny Italian restaurant with about 4 tables, the food was great. Just remembered, this restaurant was very close to a wonderful cake shop (not the bakery which is further along), with the glass front window filled with fabulous cakes.

It's nice to walk along the seafront, especially late in the day, and check out the million dollar yachts and dream!
