Milan on Sunday?

We have one day--Sunday--in Milan between a week in Venice and our flight home. What is open? What to do(other than the Duomo)?

Santa Maria Delle Grazie is open and it is strongly advisable that you book your ticket to see the Last Supper in advance or the lines will be really too long. The Castello Sforzesco too is open, most of the shops in the Galleria (near the Duomo) also are open. Remember that most museums are open on sunday and closed on monday, so you can visit some, like Brera Museum if you like art. You can also go to see the Navigli, where you can find lots of restaurants and have lunch in that area. I would personally spend my day strolling around the very centre from the Castle to the Opera House, the Galleria, the Duomo, Via Dante, up to Santa Maria delle Grazie.

One Sunday a month there is a fun antique market (with other assorted non-antique stuff, like cheap sunglasses, also for sale) in the Navigli neighborhood; sorry, I don't recall if it is the 3rd or 4th Sunday. Maybe your hotel would know. The people wathcing was quite enjoyable.

You're welcome.

Like Batuffolina said, see the Duomo (the rooftop is amazing) and the Galleria as well. Besides the shops and restaurants in the Galleria, make sure to spin around on your heel on the testicle (not kidding!) of the bull in the floor mosiac...it guarantees good luck, or a return trip or something else good (can't exactly remember!)

We had a nice dinner in the Brera neighborhood -- Nabucco was the restaurant. Great osso bucco and risotto milanese. Not off the beaten path, but quite good. A lot of posters here don't really like Milan, but we enjoyed a couple of days there.

Well personally I love Milan!! Have a wonderful time roamer. You have been given some good advice. And do enjoy Milan, have at least a drink at an "outdoor" care in the Galleria while you people watch. And oh yes, the bull,LOL, it is the opposite end of the entrance from the Duomo. Hope you can give us a trip report.

Yes, that bull. Spin around 3 times with your heel on the bull's, um, part. It's supposed to give you good luck. If you're going into the Galleria from the Duomo, walk until you reach a wide expanse, keep to your left looking on the floor and you will see it (or a small crowd spinning deliriously). It's a hoot.

I agree w/the Castello Sforzesco suggestion. It has a lot of surprises inside, and best of all, it was all free. Keep walking through the Castello to the other side, where you will see a grass covered gate, and a beautiful garden behind (which I glanced at but missed because it was about to pour).

Have fun. I loved Milan, and can't wait to go back, all thanks to the wonderful tips I got from the Fodorites here, like LoveItaly.

Note: the Castello Sforzesco museums are no longer free (although the ticket is a paltry 3 euro). As a 'forced' resident of Milan, however, I would advise that you do what residents do on Sundays, i.e. get the hell out of here!! Particularly if the weather is OK, you could take a wonderful day trip to the lakes (e.g. Lake Como, or Lake Iseo), the mountains (how about a hike in the Grigne?), or even the beach (did you now Portofino is approx. 2 hours away by train?).....

We are leaving for Milan tomorrow! Lots to do there for one day. I agree with furs. The trip to Lake Como is very doable in one day if you don't want to stay in the city. I just like to walk around and gawk at architecture, so I'm happy staying in the city. This time we will be at the F1 race on Sunday.
