Milan and Capri

I am planning our honeymoon in Italy. We are limited to fly in and out of Milan because of award travel availability. The plan is to split the time up between Milan and Capri with a possible day trip thrown in here and there. I am trying not to spare any expense on hotels, etc., but am having a tough time finding out where the best places to stay are. Can anyone recommend where to stay in Milan and Capri for four or five days each? Thanks, Martin

Hi Martin: Others might suggest places in Milan for 4-5 days, but I would consider going about 1 hour north to the Lake Como area, and specifically to Bellagio. I don't know what time of year you're talking about, but a day or two in Bellagio would be worth the trip. Trains run regularly. I'm quite sure you'd enjoy it. You can email me directly or others can fill you in on places to stay in the Lake Como area. It's really worth considering. We were there last fall and thoroughly enjoyed it........Paul J

Good morning, Martin
A number of years ago we stayed at the
Hotel EUROPA PALACE, in Anacapri. Granted this is a five star hotel, has
a very good dining room and swimming pool and a good location. Check out
www.hotelguide.ch/ search Capri and all hotel listings.
http://www.capri-island.com/-----www...-www.capri.net
You should get all the information about
Capri there.
As far as Milan goes, five days would be
quite a bit of time there, it is a very
busy city and I would say the major sights can be accomplished in one day, then move onto another less crowded..
Richard of Hickory Hills, IL.....

Hello Martin, It is your honeymoon, but
I really do not think you want these 2
destinations. Forget Milan---you want to
go straight to the Lakes---whether it
should be Como, Maggiore, or Orta is the
only question. Also, Capri is nice but
why do you want to spend 10 hours each
way to get there---that will kill 2 days of your precious honeymoon. There
are excellent options within 2 hours.
That is a whole new topic, but I would
spend 4 days on the Ligurian coast at
2 seperate locations---Santa Marghertia
and Portovenere. I think you will find
these as enjoyable as Capri, and a whole
lot closer. When do you go, and do you
plan to drive??
Personally I love Milan, my favourite Italian place. Martin when I stay in Milano I stay at the Hotel Marconi, Via Fabio Filzi,3 , 20124 Milano...a lovely place. Take in a football(soccer? are you american?) match whilst in milano.

Capri, I stay at the imaginatively titled Hotel Capri, fairly swanky and posh. Richard is right - Europa Palace is also nice.In saying that, you would probably be better off staying in Sorrento - easier as a base to get about. Do the lakes on your 5th anniversary!

Venice is a lot closer to Milan than Capri, and has excellent train connections from Milan. I would think Venice is a premier location to spare no expense on hotels, and think of how romatic a gondola ride down the grand canal would be. You can easily amuse yourself for four or five days in Venice. You could do a stopover in Verona or Padua to/from Venice, too, if you got restless for more sightseeing.
Capri is beautiful and I loved it, but I think 4 days is overdoing it. A moderately ambitious traveler can do it in a day trip from Sorrento; a laid back traveler would take one overnighter, max before honestly saying he'd done every damn thing Capri has to offer. After four days, I think you'd be communing with the ghosts of ancient Romans exiled to Capri.
Not only that, but to get to Capri, you have to go through Naples, a rough town. From Naples, you take a boat to Capri, or else a train to Sorrento then a boat to Capri. At the end of your trip you have to boat or train to Naples, then God help you, a long layover in the Naples train station, then on to Milan.
