I'm not sure that you need advance tickets. We showed up on a Sunday in September and got in without any problems. On Sunday the Mezquita is closed during lunch time but then reopens. There were a lot of people in Cordoba milling around in the general area of the Mezquita but they were not interested in going into the Mezquita once it opened (to our great relief!).

I was at the Mezquita in November. It was really beautiful.
The day I was there (was it a Sunday?), there was a mass being held in the morning--maybe at 9 or 9:30. If you wish to enter at that time, there is no charge. You may attend the mass, or just visit the part of the Mezquita other than the cathedral where the mass is being held. You can see the cathedral part after mass is finished

Sue,
As Graziella said, you can't reserve in advance. However, you also don't have to get a tour. I didn't. Actually, I'm not sure there WERE tours (but I was there in February, it might be different in the summer).
I bought a ticket (they are not timed or anything), and I rented an audioguide for 3 euros. I walked all around Mezquita listening to the audio guide - it was great.
Hope this helps a little.
