I'm going to Venice in June and plan on staying at the Mestre area. For one, I only need to take one simple bus from the airport instead of dragging my luggage from bus, to water, down a street. And yes, it is cheaper, but so much nicer for the money.

I also look at it this way, the travel to get into Venice is part of the journey. It's like flying into Key West, look what you miss!

We also plan on going to a winery on the mainland and to see Aerosmith at the Heineken Jammin' Festival On the Mainland.

If I go into Venice - what view am I missing? The one looking up an alley way?

So I guess in the end its just a preference. I don't think I'll miss anything, and those who only stay in Venice will miss what the Mainland has to offer as well.

I'm a student, so when travelling budget always comes up as an issue. This past month I just finished a trip to a few countries in Europe, and Venice was one of the places I visited. Based on my own experience, it really wasn't hard to find a cheap stay in mainland Venice itself. I only searched on yahoo 'cheap stay in Venice' and got so many replies. I in the end chose one place 150 metres away from the Santa Lucia train station, barely 10 steps away. The price? 70 euro for a 3 in a 3 star hotel.

At first I expected it to be some run-down hotel due to its price, but the shock we got when we arrived. You can check it out- Hotel Agli Artisti, www.agli-artisti-venezia.it. And the receptionist were extraordinarily friendly, I felt I'm obliged to let the whole world know about it.

So really, why bother the 15 minutes train ride when you can find something as cheap and in some cases, better, than what you get in Mestre?

not only hotels in Venice are much more expensive but if you have a heavy or a large suitcase that you have to lug around then it's best to stay in Mestre.

Pvoyageuse, It was good to see this thread come back up and to read your statement. May we all be less intrusive and judgmental about the choices folks make. It's find to make recommendations, but we're all smart enough to make them gracefully.
