Messing-English town where ancestors lived search
Help, Fodorites! I've recently discovered that my ancestors came from the Essex village of Messing in the 1600's. While on my 3 week trip through the UK (thanks to your help) we want to visit this little village and try to meet with the church officials to see the records, etc. How do I go about this--AND, has anyone been to Messing? (we will be staying with friends in Hornchurch so assume this is an easy car ride to this village). Any help will be appreciated.

You aren't Dubya are you?
The Bush family comes from Messing.
http://www.achurchnearyou.com/messing-all-saints/ gives you the chance to e-mail the Vicar.
The records you want may not be at the Church though but at the Essex Records office in Chelmsford. http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/

The Messing parish registers are now at the Essex Record Office. You can also view them online by registering and paying a small fee.
Although it is always interesting to see the places where one's ancestors lived, I would caution you against expecting too much. Unless your ancestors were wealthy, it is unlikely that you will find physical memorials of them, or be able to identify where they actually lived. This may be possible for the 19th century, but rarely for the 17th.
You may also find the parish church is kept locked. This has become necessary because of theft and vandalism.
