Meersburg or Lindau?

We only have time to visit one of these towns. We want to visit a charming town on the water, with the possibility of taking a boat ride. Can anyone recommend staying in either of these towns? Thank you!

Have not been to Meersburg, but Lindau is one of my favorite places in the world. Be sure to visit Mainau when there.
When are you going? And to where else?

Thanks for the quick reply. We are also travelling up the Romantic Road to Rothenburg. We are going to try to stop by the Andechs monastery as well.

Can we boat in Lindau?

Andechs - great choice.

The Lindau tourism site (www.lindau-tourismus.de) indicates that boat tours might be available at:

Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe, Tel. 944416.
Schiffsbetrieb Wiehrer, Schiffrundfahrten und
Charter, bei der Spielbank, Tel. 78194.

But since the town is an island and on a walk around town, you are greeted by views of lake and Alps, you almost don't need to spend the extra time it would take for a boat ride.

Meersburg is nice too, but not as scenic, imho.

I saw many tourists boats boarding and dropping off from my hotel window, although I didn't take one. I believe they cross back and forth to Switzerland. Another side trip from Lindau is to drive to Stein am Rhine (in Switzerland) for the lovley doll museum and Rhine Falls - quite low key, but lovely.
I'm sure you will also love Rothenburg and the Romantic Road. Try to stop for a casual wine tasting at a family vineyard somewhere along the way.
Sounds like a wonderful trip!

For a romantic town, I would MOST definitely choose Meersburg over Lindau.
Meersburg is really charming, old, has a nice castle, and is a central port to take the ferry everywhere - Mainau, Constance, Lindau, Romanshors/Switz., etc.

Forgot to say that Uberlingen is also worth seeing (try the big Italian gelateria on 'the corner')!!!

PS: that should be RomanshorN above.

Just returned from Europe where we spent one night in Lindau and have definitely put it on our list of towns we want to return to. However, have not been to Meersburg and would also like to visit it as well as other towns on the Bodensee. It is a beautiful area.
