Brits take their beans seriously
any supermarket has rows and rows of canned flageolets - incroyable and an indicator of something - not sure what
I buy cans of Weight Watchers baked beans there because they have lower salt and calories but they really can make a meal avec or sans curry, one of the most foul spices IMO in the world
Beans indeed seem (Fnar SEEMS) to be the English national dish
Funny i've never noticed a bean plant in English farms

What Girlspytravel says about fat in US chain restaurants like Olive Garden is true. "Fettucine Alfredo" in an American restaurant is famous for having typically has the equivalent of a pound of butter in it.
Fat tastes good -- it's a visceral reaction that has nothing to do with actual flavor. Fat = Yum. So you put more in, and people buy it.
And our portions are immense.
As for dipropyl ketone and hydroxyphrenyl-2-butanone, no thanks, I think I'll pass.

I'm not sure I understand this. Fat tastes good in the mouth, before it gets anywhere near the viscera.

Ahh.... You guys are always so serious! Don't you know food is only part of a balanced diet? Back to OP's question, here is my answer: Only Irish coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar and fat. So, when in Ireland, do what ireland-ish people do and drink coffee. Even if from a mediocre eatery. If you don't believe me, watch www.ratatouillemovie.net and listen closely to Chef Remy.

Come on, Jahoulih. You know what I meant.
1 : felt in or <b>as if in</b> the viscera : deep <a visceral conviction> (my boldface)
2 : not intellectual : instinctive, unreasoning <visceral drives>
3 : dealing with crude or elemental emotions : earthy <a visceral novel>
4 : of, relating to, or located on or among the viscera : splanchnic <visceral organs>

Well, I suppose I knew what you meant, but I do think our liking for fat has something to do with actual flavor.
Some flavor compounds, as I understand it, are soluble only or chiefly in fat--just as others are soluble only or chiefly in water, and others still are soluble only or chiefly in alcohol.

>>>>Cholmondeley, what brand of baked beans do you recommend - or should I just stick with homemade?>>>>
No one makes their own - supermarkets sell them for 10p. But true gourmands such as I will only allow Heiz to pass our lips.
(with pattak's vindaloo paste. Don't do this if you are in an enclosed space and smoke)

of course heinz is the classic baked beans but i prefer the cheaper supermarket brands as they dont seem to have as much sugar in.
although the heinz bean pizza (which i think is now extinct) was amazing.
