May - Genoa to Amalfi to Rome

Hi, Just made reservations for a cruise that leaves us in Genoa on May 2. Would like to take train down to Naples or Sorrento and spend a few days doing Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Pompeii, Ravello and Capri then back to Rome on May 7th to leave the morning of May 8th. Not sure if we will do trains or car rental (must check prices). Is this do-able or am I trying to do too much? I would really appreciate comments or suggestions for our time in Italy. Thanks so much for your help.
Carole

Hi Carole,

Just the train ride alone will take 7:44 - 9 hours to Naples, plus additional travel (via whatever means) to your destination.

With only 5 days, I would try to fly!

Buon viaggio!

Well, this is entirely do-able. You could go by train which is cheaper than trying to fly. If you factor in that May 2 will be a travel day and don't count that as a day to really be seeing things, then you are ok. For example, dependent on what time you leave Genova, you can expect to get into Napoli in 7 hours time. Looking at the www.trenitalia.com website on May 2, there is a 8:52 am train departing Genova (Principe e Bagnole stations) that gets into Napoli at 4:30 pm; then a 10:52 train that gets there by 6:30 pm, etc. From Napoli Centrale, you could take the convenient Circumvesuviana train (leaves every 10 mins) into Sorrento, make that your base for 5 days. After settling in, you can start exploring the Amalfi Coast, Capri, the next day - May 3 - and have 4 full days to do so before your return travel day on May 7. Buon viaggio!

Hi, Thank you both for your responses. I think we will do a train and just fit in what we can and not make ourselves crazy.
Happy travels! Carole

Also - did you book your flight already? Could you fly out of Naples to save you the backtrack to Rome?
