May Day in Barcelona

We are planning a trip which will put us in Barcelona on May Day (May 1st). Has anyone been there on May Day? Are the sightseeing sites open? What about stores and restaurants? Anything happen there on that day that would be special to see?

A peaceful demonstration by the unions, defending workers´ rights...

Restaurants will be open. Most shops will be closed.

we'll be there at the same time; Sitges a good place to visit? or Montserrat?

If many people are not working that day they may head to Montserrat. I made the mistake of visiting Montserrat during a holiday (La Merce). It was crowded & noisy - really ruining the visit for me. If May day is similar I'd avoid a visit to Montserrat on this day.

Are all of the sites in Barcelona open on May Day? We are not shoppers so shops being closed will not be a problem as long as the sites and restaurants are open.
