Nora, I stayed at the Hotel Margutta in the summer of 1997. I can't say it was really all that great. First, the taxi driver couldn't find the Via Laurina and took us to Via Margutta instead, which is not where the hotel is. Second, the rooms are very small and dark, and you can hardly turn around in the bathrooms. The shower was impossible because you had to sit down. The breakfasts were nothing fabulous. The location, was good however, very close to the Spanish steps, metro stop, and many actually functioning ATM's. I have read many postings raving about other hotels in Rome, I think you should look further.
Gina,

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions? We'd like to save money but we want something nice particularly the baths as we'll be three women to a room!

Hi again, Nora. Well, since I haven't been back to Rome since summer 1997, all I can recommend is what other people keep saying on this forum. Hotel La Residenza, Hotel Campo dei Fiori, Hotel Eden and the Lord Byron Hotel keep appearing on postings of people who have visited Rome. I do think the Spanish Step area is safe, convenient, and walkable distance to a lot you'd want to see. Good luck to you. When are you going? Be sure to tell us what you ended up doing. Have a wonderful time. Gina
We stayed at the Hotel Margutta for a week this past May. We liked it very much. We had a very large, airy room with an immense bathroom and a small balcony. It was on the third floor. Obviously, they have small and large rooms, make it a point to ask for a big room if you're going to stay awhile. Hotel breakfasts in Italy are uniformally mediocre, even in expensive expense-acccount type hotels. We found the management friendly, the price right and the location very convenient. Have fun in Rome, I'm sure there are plently of nice hotels.
A friend and I stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen in Mar '94 and it was really nice, with full bath, tv, hairdryers, large room, near train station (via Firenze 48, ph 06-482-3920; fax 06-482-1092). In '94 it was around $60, when we returned in Mar '97, it had gone up to $90 (and out of our budget). We instead stayed right next door at Hotel Seiler (via Firenze 48, ph 06-488-0204; fax 06-488-0688). We had a large room with frescoed ceiling, full bath, tv, quiet for around $73. Some rooms were better than others so be sure to look. A week later, we returned to Rome and stayed at another good hotel, Hotel Bianca (via Volturno 48, ph 44-40-672; fax 44-68-605). We had a big room with 3 beds, full bath for also about $73. This hotel is very near train station (and in a safe neighborhood), I can give you directions to all, if you'd like.

Good luck!
