Malpensa from Milan..where to stay?
My daughter will be arriving by train from Venice to spend one day/night in Milan before flying home to NY. I think the Venice train arrives at Stazione Centrale, and that the train to Malpensa Airport leaves from the Cadorno station. I'd appreciate any suggestions about where would be the best place to stay (on a budget!) with easy access to Milan and these two train stations. Thanks!

I've been hearing from hotels in the Milan area that for the night of September 3 the hotel rates are very high due to the Grand Prix. Help! Any advice??? I'd been checking hotels in the Stazione Centrale area. Rooms that are listed on line for around 80 euro seem to be going for close to 200 euro.

Several years ago, I spent a day/night in Milan before my flight home. I stayed in the Hotel London --- http://www.hotel-london-milan.com/
It's on Via Rovello, a small quiet street in walking distance from subway (Carioli stop). If I recall Carioli was just one stop from Cardorna ... and you could then take the Malpensa Express train to Malpensa. Of course, when traveling on subway w/ luggage, it can be a bit of schlep dragging your bag up/down stairs.
As for the hotel, it was a basic accommadation. Characterize it as businessman's hotel. For my needs & the location, I thought it was a good choice. I also noticed there were a couple other small hotels on same street (Via Rovello) however don't recall names.

We've stayed at the London Hotel two times. Very basic, very clean, very good location, a bit noisy (both interior and exterior). I would stay there again, but my husband would prefer somewhere else.
Have either you or your daughter considered her continuing to Malpensa on arrival from Venice (taking the Malpensa bus from Stazione Centrale) and spending the night there? Not very exciting, I know, but you might find more reasonable accommodations. Do a search of "Malpensa hotels" which should turn up several threads.

Sounds like you really have a "problem" if you have already checked hotels around Centrale Station, due to the GRand Prix! You MIGHT find a single at one (we stayed at the nice Atlantic(I think ??), think it is Best Western affiliated...you can call the BW 800 number!) We did the reverse of your daughter...arriving from the States at Malpensa and taking the airport bus to Central station. Many hotels are located within walking distance.
Just to get a glimpse of down town we jumped on the Metro and in FOUR (4) stops we were in downtown Milan and the duomo, the square, and most of the major sights.
Your daughter could then return to her hotel around the Centrale station and take the airport bus to Malpensa the next morning.
OUr friends stayed at the London Hotel with another couple...yes it is basic and the other couple did not like it...., but am sure it would be fine. IT is downtown Milan and the next morning your daughter would taxi to the Cadorno? station and then the train to Malpensa airport.
We continued the second morning by train from Centrale station to Como so did not return to Malpensa....but from what I hear, lots of the outgoing flights from Milan leave VERY early in the morning.!
