Malcolm Miller @ Chartres

We're headed to France in a few days. Could someone tell me what time Malcolm Miller conducts his famous tour of Chartres? Is it necessary to be there far in advance to be sure to get on his tour?

Thanks, fellow travelers

Betsy, Malcolm Miller gives two tours daily Mon-Sat unless he's preempted by a church function. The first tour usually starts around noon, and the second one at around 2:45PM. Just make sure to get there a bit earlier, and gather with the rest of the English speaking fellow tourists waiting for Mr. Miller in front of the cathedral's gift shop. When Mr Miller arrives he charges 40FF per person, and then gives his wonderful tour which lasts about an hour and a half. He covers slightly different material between the two tours, so that if you have the time I encourage you to attend both.

Whoa! Two posts at the same hour and minute requesting the same info. Have never seen that on the message board before.

Thanks for your replies.

Hi Betsy,

Yes, I did take the tour last week with Malcolm Miller at Chartres. It is well worth it and I beleive it was 40ff a person. Just show up by the book store at 12.00 or 2:15. I really recommend it. Enjoy...P.S. My forum question on this tour has also come up again even though I have already gone. Everyone answering me also agreed it was worth the trip.

I agree that if you can, take the tour twice. When I took it, he asked who had been to the morning tour AND who had been to tours the day before. There was a minimum of duplication between the tours

Back then he was not allowed to charge but had to rely on tips. If he can charge 40 FF that is great for him and still a bargain for the tourist

I was looking for something else (a story for my daughter on this weekend's "All Things Considered") - - and I stumbled on this story on the Feb 11 weekend edition, telling about Malcolm miller and his tours of Chartres Cathedral.

Informative, if you have never enjoyed one of Mr. Miller's tours - - and a nice reminiscence, if you have.

Best wishes,

Rex
