Madrid hotels
My husband and I will be spending 3 nights in Madrid in February. Would like recommendations for a decent hotel (clean, comfortable) in a central location, with easy access to sights, either walking distance or short walk to public transportation. Hoping to keep the price at $100.00 USD per night. Any ideas? Also, we'll be taking the train from Madrid to Lisbon where we'll be spending 3 nights as well. Any hotel ideas with the same qualities as described above? Or should we skip Lisbon and take the train to a different city/country? Bareclona? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Fodorites put me onto www.madridman.com
Great site - take a look. We're driving through Spain in Oct. to the Algarve in southern Portugal then returning to Madrid to fly out.

Also worth a look:
www.tourspain.es
www.andalucia.com
www.spaintour.com
www.parador.es

For the Algarve look at: www.carvoeiro.com

I'm sure if you did a search here you'd find plenty of recommendations.
We stayed at the Hotel Carlos right near the main department store and off the center square called Sol. The location was great, beautiful breakfast, very clean three star, near the metro. This hotel is under the Best Western umbrella and can be reached toll free in the U.S. I sent my sister there in April and she was also happy with the hotel. You can find it in several guide books as good budget accommodiations. Off season we spent under $100.

Jen, all you requirements are met by all the hotels listed above. I have stayed at the Mora and highly recommend it. I also strongly recommend Hotel Atlantico (a Best Western Hotel) on Gran Via across the street from Plaza Callao metro and a bus stop right in front of the hotel. This hotel has an excellent buffet breakfast included, it is very, very well located for walking to Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, etc. and it is surprisingly quiet (they passed my husband's test!). The staff is also very helpful. It was about $94/double. The Mora is about $50-55/double. Carlos V is also very, very well located on a pedestrian street. It fills out quickly as it caters to small tour groups.
