I am planning a trip to Madrid in November. Can anyone recommend a clean centrally located hotel with a bit of atmosphere? I am looking for something around $75 for a single room. THANKS!

Richard, (me again!), <BR> <BR>I stayed at Hotel Mora on Paseo del Prado 32, across the street from the Botanical Gardens and from El Prado Museum. Short walk to the Atocha Station. Great location! About $55/night for a double, ensuite facilities. Their phone number is 34-91-420-1569. As a suggestion, ask for a room on the fourth floor, away from the Paseo street. Book way in advance as the hotel seems very popular. Clean, comfortable. We walked to everywhere from the hotel, even to the Royal Palace (about 20 mts walk). They have a small cafe on the side where you can have breakfast for a very reasonable price. Also, we tried a nearby restaurant, Las Cuatro Fuentes, and it was excellent. <BR> <BR>Another good one was Hotel Atlantico located in la Gran Via. Richard, <BR> <BR>We enjoyed the Carlos V which is located right off the Puerta del Sol and very near the Plaza Mayor. It was clean, quiet (considser an interior room as Spainards are total late owls and lots of motorcycles, singing and clapping at all hours) and conveneint. As to atmosphere it had a great suit of armor in the lobby and a beautiful dining room to begin your day with a sumptous buffet breakfast. Try the Hotel Paris or the Hotel Moderno in Old Madrid ( great location..walk to just about everything). <BR>The Moderno is short on atmosphere, the Paris is better for that...I found the Moderno a little noisy, but I am sensitive to noise and it was my first night in Spain, jet lag, etc... <BR> <BR>Also, consult Rick Steves and Karen Brown ( KB is VERY reliable, might ne a little more expensive) for suggestions. <BR> <BR>Have fun...

I ran across this article in the NYTIMES,2-21-99, re Madrid and hotels. <BR> <BR>"Inexpensive hotels with character are hard to come by in Madrid...An exception is the Carlos V,( the one Maria mentioned) 5 Maestro Victoria, 34-91-531-4100, FAX 44 91-531-3761, a comfortable family run hotel with 67 rooms on a pedestrian <BR> street in the heart of downtown. Double are about $100...also, the just renovated Opera Hotel, 2 Cuesta de Santo Domingo, 34-91-541-28--, FAX, 34-91-541-6923, in a lovely location facing the Royal Opera House. Doubles are about $97" <BR> <BR>You might investigate these as rates vary and the NY Times is a reliable source.

7/25/99 Just returned from Madrid and the Hotel Carlos V. Our fourth time there. We liked it. very pleasant and a real nice breakfast room buffet included with room for around $100 double. Convenient.

I asked a friend who just came back from Madrid, and she mentioned the Mayorazgo. Has anyone had any experience with that hotel? <BR>

What are good neighborhoods of Madrid to be in? Where are the bad ones?
