I haven't stay at the hotel, but remember the street and there are a number of great tapas bars in that area. It's about a 15 minutes walk to Plaza Mayor, five more on to the Royal Palace. I also recalled a small Momma & Papa restaurant in that area called "Las Cuatro Fuentes". Excellent food, superb service, and unbelievable prices. They open at 8pm for dinner, which is also the case for most dining restaurants in Madrid. You'll be very close to the Spain Office of Tourism on Calle de Medinaceli (head towards the Prado, at Medinaceli turn left, the building is about three blocks on your left). The streets on that area are sort of small and the traffic is a bit congested, I suggest you do not drive.

Paolo,
Maira has given you great info. I'll just add that I do know the L de V but haven't stayed there. It's new, opened last yr., so will be fresh & up to date (Internet access in lobby, maybe even in rms?). We stayed 3 times (6 nights) recently in their other new sister property, the Suites Barrio Salamanca (booked on their web site) and have stayed in other Green hotels in Spain. I think they offer very good, predictable accom. for the price-a solid value. Because of the ecological bent (thus their name), they may seem kind of stark-rms have a spare, modern decor with bare wood or marble floors, but nice furnishings, the remote control AC works ferociously well, the handy rm safe easy to use, the housekeeping immaculate and the marble baths have great showers. There was a small charge for sending emails. We find the young staff helpful and friendly.
I know this neighborhood quite well (have a friend who lived on L de V, and I used to study at the nearby Ateneo). As Maira says, you’ll have a fine location with an easy walk of the Museum Triangle, the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. This area in the heart of Old Madrid is in a constant state of gentrification/yuppification (construction noise)-a warren of tiny, dark narrow streets, but directly behind the elegant Palace Hotel & Parliament. The only caveat-the parallel Calle Huertas is filled with clubs that rock until the early morning hrs, and there have been recent reports of pickpocketing around Huertas and Plaza Santa Ana by North African immigrant gangs, so be aware and leave all valuables in the rm safe when you wander around.
Besides the "Cuatro Fuentes" just 2 blks away on Alameda 4, you can have the best beer and smoked salmon canapes in town at "Bar Taberna de Dolores" (Plaza de Jesús), plus more tapas at historic "Casa Alberto" (Huertas 18), "Cervecería Alemana" (Plaza Santa Ana)- the crowded, 1904 beer hall of Hemingway fame (grilled shrimp, Russian salad). For sit down dining in the vecinity we like "Zerain" (Quevedo 3), a pretty, very popular, 2 fl, typical Basque cider house (gargantuan portions of hearty, rustic fare), "Casa Txoko" (on Jovellanos, across from Teatro de la Zarzuela) with inexp. Basque tapas ("pintxos") downstairs and to the right in the Basque Cultural Center building, and "Paradís Madrid" (Marqués de Cubas 14-down the st from Am Exp & Parliament), Catalán cuisine in a handsome setting.
And for nightlife, there’s Spain’s best jazz club, Café Central, up on Pl. Santa Ana, and great, authentic flamenco 6 blocks away on Cañizares 10 at "Casa Patas".
I think you'll be fine at the L de V.
Hope you enjoy your stay.
Maribel
